Leanne Averbach

Leanne Averbach is a text and performance poet. Her first volume of poetry, f e v e r, will be released in Spring, 2005 (Mansfield Press). Erotic and strange, f e v e r docu-rides a life examined through multifarious roles and experiences. Life as a former left-wing activist and trade union organizer takes shape through Averbach’s iconoclastic lens, including some indelible moments spent in factories or incarcerated in jail cells. Visual art often incites her work, as do her family encounters, her lovers, and the “mad poetry” of harsh international realities. Averbach has performed her work with jazz musicians in Italy, Canada and New York City and has just released a CD, also entitled “fever” (Ekstasis Editions) as well as “Carwash”, the first of several video-poems.

Her work has been published in many literary magazines : The Fiddlehead, Descant, Antigonish Review, Dalhousie Review, Sub-Terrain, Poetry New Zealand, The New Quarterly, Canadian Women's Studies, In Performance, Wayne County Review, Washington Square, Grain, and Big City Lit, as well as the anthologies Love in the Media Age, 2001 and Poesia d'Amore in translation in Italy.
