John Degen

John Degen was born in Toronto in 1965, and has lived in Ottawa and London, England.  He holds a Masters Degree in English Literature from the University of Toronto. Two of his plays, Broken Line Highway and Then and Now have been produced in Toronto, and he is working on a third, 6000 Kilometers. He has had poetry and short fiction published in a number of Canadian literary magazines. He was the publisher and editor of ink magazine, a national literary quarterly, from 1994 to 1999. As an arts journalist, he has had work published in Quill & Quire, paragraph, Blood and Aphorisms, Books in Canada, eye weekly, NOW Magazine, The Globe & Mail, Stage,and Performing Arts & Entertainment in Canada.

His debut poetry collection, Animal Life in Bucharest was published in May 2000 by Pedlar Press, and a new collection Killing Things was published in 2002. He has recently completed a novel, The Uninvited Guest, about totalitarianism, hockey, and the anecdotal history of backgammon, set in Romania and Canada.
