Susan L. Helwig

Programmer and host for "In Other Words" on CKLN-FM for the past eight years, Susan L. Helwig grew up on a farm in the south part of Grey County. She now calls Toronto home. In addition to publication credits in many literary journals and anthologies, she won second prize in the 2001 Hart House Poetry Contest. She has worked as a church organist and Sunday School pianist, and currently sings in the alto section of the Hart House Singers at the University of Toronto. Her first collection, called Catch the Sweet, was published by Seraphim Editions of Toronto.

Classroom Approach:
Helwig will read from her own work to discuss the creative process, including sources of inspiration, the drafting and re-drafting of poems and struggles to find just the right format, i.e. prose poems versus so-called free verse. She is particularly keen on working with rural students, as that is her background.
