Andréa Jarmai

Andréa Jarmai is a Toronto poet with poems published in literary journals in Canada, the US, England, Ireland and Japan. She sits on the board of the Art Bar Poetry Series. Born in Budapest, Andréa grew up living and travelling in Europe, Africa, North America and the Caribbean, before settling in Montréal, where she studied Classics.

She has worked as a falconer involved with raptor rehabilitation in Québec, and upon moving to Toronto, as a falconer and keeper at the Metro Toronto Zoo. She has published three chapbooks: The Ahab Poems, One Bee and Woman in Armour (Fooliar Press, 2003, 2003, 2004), and the band she belongs to – fooliar – released a CD in Japan (The Music Factory, 1999).

Her first book-length collection of poems, Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls [Seraphim Editions], was published in April of 2004. She is currently editing a volume of critical essays on the work of Gwendolyn MacEwen for Guernica Editions' Writers Series, translating the poetry of Hungarian/Canadian poet George Faludy, and working on her second book of poems, with the working title of Paracelsus’ Dreams.
