Joseph Maviglia is a poet and singer-songwriter of southern Italian descent whose work juxtaposes the traditional rural music of southern Italy with contemporary North American urban roots music. His song, "Father, it's Time" appeared on the Juno-Award winning compilation CD, The Gathering (Best World Music Recording, 1992, released by Attic Records ACD 1320). His poetry has appeared widely in journals and magazines in Canada and the United States, and both his poetry and songs are the result of two cultural influences coming together to create a musical and poetic hybrid. His chapbook, Movietown, was released by Streetcar Editions of Toronto in 1989. His full length collection of poetry, A God Hangs Upside Down was published in 1994 by Guernica Editions. His CD/cassette Memory to Steel is available on Steelrail Records SRCD100/SRC100 released in 1994.

Classroom Approach:
Maviglia's method of instruction is best defined as collaborative. Through the use of music, poetry, and theatre, Maviglia presents his students with an informal performance, and in the workshop periods encourages students to draw from their own cultural experiences and in turn perform for him. The idea behind this style of instruction is to make poetry and music a more intimate yet social experience as well as a way of learning. Maviglia most recently presented a series of workshops at Winona Senior School entitled Cross-Culturalism, Anti-Racism, and the Arts. He has also given workshops and readings at Upper Canada College Preparatory School and other learning institutions.
