Bruce Rice
Bruce Rice has published three books of poetry. His most recent
collection, The Illustrated Statue of Liberty
(Coteau, 2003), has been nominated for the City of Regina Book Award.
He also received Grain Magazine's
2002 Anne Szumigalksi Award for the best poem or sequence published in
Grain that year. Excerpts were also performed in Regina at Globe
Theatre's On the Line series
in 2001 and 2002.
Bruce's first collection, Daniel,
received the 1989 Canadian Authors Association Award. Descent Into Lima, his second book,
was published by Coteau in 1996. His work has appeared on CBC Radio and
in magazines such as Grain,
Fiddlehead, Canadian Author and Bookman, Prairie Fire, Event,
and NeWest Review. It has
been anthologized in 100% Cracked
Wheat, 200% Cracked Wheat, 2000% Cracked Wheat, and Heading Out: the New Saskatchewan Poets
(all Coteau), Beyond Boarders
(Turnstone/Twin Rivers Press), and Facing
the Lion (beacon Press). He has also collabrated on several
poetry performances.
Prairie Fire has called his
work "a poetry of defiance." The CAA judges said, "[Rice] portrays
life's hardships with an elegance and simplicity of language which is
stunning."
Bruce is a member of the League of Canadian Poets and has served as
President and Vice-President of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild.
