John Smith

John Smith was born in Toronto on August 10, 1927. He attended the University of Toronto, from which he holds degrees in Mathematics, Physics and English. For seven years he taught English in Ontario high schools, and subsequently spent twenty-five years on the English faculty of the University of Price Edward Island. He is currently Professor Emeritus of that University, and lives in Charlottetown. In December, 2002, he was appointed by the Provincial Legislature to a two-year term as P.E.I.'s first poet laureate. He has published five volumes of poetry, but is perhaps better known for regular public readings from the works of classic and contemporary authors, chiefly British and American.
