Preamble
IMPORTANT NOTICES Please under no circumstances abandon cats or kittens on the Hill or by the Cat Sanctuary. The cats will not readily accept newcomers and for the most part chase them away. Nor is it a given new cats will find the Sanctuary in search of shelter and food. Most abandoned cats are very disorientated and will just randomly wander off finding starvation and death - especially in the winter. If you can no longer care for your cat, please take her to the Humane Society where she can be well taken care of and put up for adoption. This is what we do for any abandoned cat we find. And it causes us great grief when we cannot capture one - which happens way too often. And if you give kittens as a gift for Christmas, ensure the person or the household you give them to can provide for them. If not, then you should reconsider your priorities. No kitten deserves to be abandoned like an unwanted toy. Owning a pet is a serious responsibiliy. If you don't share that feeling, you shouldn't own a pet. It's as simple as that. Abandoning your pet is a criminal offence with up to 2 years in jail. Perhaps you who would be so callous should think about that. Treat your pets well, and they will reward you with unconditional love for the rest of their lives. Should we all care so much as they care for us. Klaus J. Hello All:
It is treacherous out there today. There is a tin layer of ice on
every surface so it took me at least 20 minutes longer to walk to and
from the Hill than usual and I attached "icers" to my boots for extra
traction. Slow and steady.....I also brought a small bag of kitty
litter to spread within the compound for extra traction and it works
OK. There is a bin of salt outside the fence which I sparingly spead
on the walkway. I hate that stuff as do the critters. When the bus
strike is over I am hoping to pick up a bag of Ecotraction, a new
environmentally product that was developed in Ottawa, to try out.
Unfortunately, it is only available at a few locations, none of which
are downtown.
The usual suspects were waiting patiently at the colony for me. Only
dear Blackie and Fluffy came out to greet me. Max was smart and
stayed on the platform. He and Spot jumped onto the overhang to bump
my head in greeting as I picked up the bowls. Someone had left a lot
of wet food in five bowls which was frozen solid. I cleaned the
bowls and after feeding the cats I put them away in the shed, leaving
only the dried food and water bowls out. I will make up a sign to put
on the overhang asking people not to feed the cats. With any luck
that will discourage visitors from leaving food.
How's this for a sign, especially en francais:
These cats are feed daily. Please do not give them food. Thank you.
Ces chats sont nourris chaque jour. SVP ne pas les donner la
nouriture. Merci.
I dropped over to feed the Whites. They did not come out but they are
making it up to the bowl as I could see their paw prints leading to
their feeding station.
Take care if you are out walking today.

Hello All:
I met Laura on the Hill yesterday morning and we had a grand time
feeding the cats. Sebastien dropped by en route to the gym and to
check on the Whites who are making it to their feeding station. The
usual suspects were in great form and they and the humans were more
than happy with the 10 degree temperature. It was lovely to be able
to sit on the bench with the gang and to spoil them with treats. I
don't know who enjoyed the treats more; the felines or the human.
It was still quite icy when we arrived but Laura had a wonderful time
bashing the ice with the ice breaker. And I had a wonderful time
watching. There was quite a thaw going on and we enjoyed
watching Bebe who was up to her "knees" in water watching the rivulets
of water.
Laura and I were talking about the safety of the frozen canned food
that was left at the colony for the cats. It seems that in the name
of caution it would be wise to discard it, Klaus. Please see the
attached article:

As well Klaus are you planning to feed the cats on New Year's Day?

Hi Klaus:
I am glad to know that you threw out the cat food.It is always best to err on
the side of caution. I appreciate visitors' good intentions, but I cannot
understand their leaving wet food at the colony in winter. Do they not
realise that the food will freeze and spoil?

The cats have been well provided for, including the whites. I, on the other
hand am a solid block of ice and slowly thawing out.

It is with deep regret, due to problems with my hip, I will no longer be able
to feed the cats on the weekend during the cold weather. I have noticed that
it is increasingly difficult for me to climb the fence into the compound.
Once the weather is milder (perhaps March or April) I will reassess my
involvement with the colony. I will certainly miss the cats and the
volunteers.

Hey everybody...
Here's hoping everybody enjoyed this fabulous and beautiful weekend, and are
prepared for the deep freeze heading our way. -30C? Eeek.
Ben and i were chatting (before he headed off to fun in the sunshine of Hawaii)
and even though he will be going back to work soon, he will be taking up the
feeding of the cats on Saturdays, and i will be the Sunday girl. Brian will
be standing strong in his weekday capacity, and everybody else, well you just
keep stopping by at any given moment because in the winter, our kitties need
every bit of loving and and every bit of body heat they can get.
We had a fun morning today. i arrived around 930, running into Ben who was on
his way to get some water for our kitties. The whole gang was out in the
sunshine, sucking up the heat and charging their 'batteries'. The mood was
so good that when Ben brought out the string, it was a playday for sure. It
started with Max, then Bebe was going crazy. Along came Spot, and Brownie,
and even Fluffy joined in the fun of the string. The best was when Tigris
came along for her share. So calm, so serene, with only one paw moving she
had her way with that string. It was a good morning.
Hope to see all of you soon. Have a great week. Thank you.
