ON THE HEATH by Klaus J. Gerken I Out on the heath Where the grass grows high In the morning dew lies heavy on it. There I saw a woman was so lovely Fair and tender was her body. I went to her and spoke to her And then she let me have my will. Out on the heath Where the grass grows tall Where the dew lies heavy on it. There I saw a woman once Lovely firm and tender was her body. I went to her and we were lovers. Ah, if I could only be there with her now! II In the valley is an apple tree Old and strong and wise - The fruit it bears is heavenly - How can it be otherwise? In the valley is an apple tree Old and strong and wise The fruit it bears is heavenly Under clear blue skies. I came there with my love one day She bid me eat the fruit - And now my love and I are wed. Ah, my friends, 't is good! III Went to battle Lost the war Now can go home Never more Victors conquer Win the war Go home happy Make the laws Went to battle Won the war Now can go home Open door! IV Maiden working in the field Maiden come and take a rest Maiden have you thought of me Maiden come into the forest. Maiden working in the field Maiden come and take a rest Warm the sun and warm the heart Both of us are nature blessed. Maiden working in the field Maiden come and take a rest Warm the heart and warm the sun It's cooler in the forest! V Heavy is the rain that falls Heavy is this heart of mine Woman never do you call Woman why so bide your time? Heavy is the rain that falls Heavy is this heart of mine Woman if you care for me at all Come and warm this heart of mine! VI Sun where are you? Come on sun! This damp weather Is no fun! Sun where are you? Come on sun! Without you She cannot come! Sun where are you? Come on sun! Without you The way's too long! Sun where are you? Come on sun! This damp weather Is no fun! VII Clouds hide the sun The rain falls down Upon the ground Upon the town. My love's away Since yesterday Where she has gone She told no one. Not even I I don't know why We always were A happy pair. Clouds hide the sun The rain falls down Upon the ground Upon the town. VIII The little that one masters, One masters everything: The little that one doesn't, Does it matter all that much? IX Out in the fields a maiden sings A song of sad despair: "My love has gone from me this spring My heart's broken beyond repair." Out in the field a maiden sang A song of sad despair: "My love will not return to me My heart's broken beyond repair." X Pretty pretty maid Where to do you go? Pretty pretty maid Can I go there too? "I go to the forest sir To pluck wild flowers there - You may go with me If you treat me not dishonestly." Pretty pretty maid I won't You have my word on that. "But sir that cannot be enough For what the leaves will see us do." XI Good these days of summer Good for every lover - Every forest, every dale Can easy be a bower. XII A maiden sang a song of love I listened quietly She sang so sweetly that a dove Flew to her lovingly - "Go my dove and take this song To him for whom I long - Tell him how I long for him Every minute of each day -" A maiden sang a song of love And then I went to her This maiden, yes, she was my love And I her parted lover. XIII In my room alone I sing my song alone - Why does she not come? She said that she would come. In my room alone I sing my song alone - I see her in my dreams As if she still were here. XIV The sun comes peeping through the clouds A sparrow sings his song - Summer love we now applaud All the days and clear nights long. The sun comes peeping through the clouds A sparrow sings his song - Summer love we now applaud Come and love if love be strong! XV She has flown away from me No one smiles here anymore No one drinks wine anymore The wine is bitter No more sweet My lady is away from me Why has she deserted me? She has flown away from me The house is empty now No one wanders through the hall The bed where once we slept No one sleeps there now My lady is away from me Why has she deserted me?
