SONGS 1971 - 1979 by Klaus J. Gerken 1. SILVER WINGS silver wings upon time as my love binds my heart fast guide me through the silent past to renew my heart's loss once before long ago when fields were ripe and winds were low my love and i lay us down in a field of eider down there we listened to the songs of wild birds carry on through the warm magnetic day where we loved all time away coda all the creatures gathered round to appear neath perfect calm surrounding us ... ... ... then the night came at ease and the stars appeared to please only us as yet we knew it could not last how 'twas true how very true verse D A D G D A G D coda G D A G D 1971 2. oh lady in this crazy dream i come to bid you bye you speak in words of wonderment a tear is in your eye refr oh hold the dream don't let it go to waste it's all that we have left, there's no other place you came to me in rain you said you would be true i held you close all through the night i guess i always knew refr let's build a fantasy draw from plans uncured the voice of mandolins few away unheard refr we conjured up some clown a jugular and a prince you asked if they could laugh we haven't seen them since refr 1971 3. A FINE SUMMER'S MORNING Dm - G7 - (C) Am a fine summer's morning as sparrows are calling the reason for falling the sorrow offending touched off by lending the body for mending through breaking or bending the rules never ending the sorrow lies heavy as mountains and valleys prepare for descending the path never ending and reasons are shallow as meanings are hollow in love's dismal quarrel and desertion pretending she has fallen on roses such beautiful roses that touch only lightly her gown clinging softly the scent of her perfume so rare and so mellow erasing the shadow of her only sin the hearse on the outside prepares for to travel the last dusty mile through sun turned to rain and as she is lowered the tears that are pillared upon earth like flowers G C the few who remain 16 April 1972 (Music 4 June 1975) 4. SUNSHINE HOLD running through the sand with a bottle in your hand and a smile upon your face taking no bother the time doesn't matter we're making no haste seeing that the writing on the sky that is shining saying all is the truth finding that the sunshine is akin to moonshine and the sky is our roof so sunshine hold me softly stoned writing a poem or throwing a stoen into the sea watching the water as we go farther so good and so free loving the moments and climbing the mountains we reach for the sky knowing that we are always together and our laughter knows why so sunshine hold me softly stoned walking down the mall and hearing someone call in a friendly voice the sun is shining and the wine starts flowing god we ain't got no choice to find that we're loving the life that we're living we've known it before old times and new times sad times and glad times we've stood at their door so sunshine hold us softly stoned 1973? 5. SONG IN C You come at night C I see you smile You come to me Your love beguiles And when you're hurt You never cry But only hide Away awhile G7 - C And when you laugh C The sun is no Comparison To that perfect glow That come from being C - F What you are A special woman G7 Near or far C So come to me Be by my side Through love we fly Through love we glide 26 May 75 6. LIFE There are songs that fill the sphere A with sadness never felt before Bb The troubles of a troubled mind D the emptiness that bars the door A and shuts you in, a prisoner E - A in self - the only conqueror E - A that stalks you with the fear you hold D - A and cuts you down before you're old E(7) - A And there are songs that leave you here upon your desert island stranded like a frozen corpse within the icy silence of the mind - communication cut off when two people find that their relation- ship's an empty situation So that parting is the only hope that both of them have left with awkward glances they accept that nothing of their love is left - so these songs that bar to fill the sphere with sadness never felt before they tremble with the last goodbye and in emptiness forever bar the door. 1975? 7. The morning comes soft D But the window is locked And I can't believe what I see A Your innocence fled But then don't forget Last night I did write you this scene D And now all is lost In a personal frost There's blood where there once was a war And hope is a game For which we all wait And hope is a silent guitar We traveled together G Through many fine weather D And now you refuse to accept Em - A7 - D That this old killing game G Which is all that we play D Is the only game for us left A7 - D So if the darkness this night Is blindingly bright It's only because we're ahead In losing ourselves And the anger that welled Is nothing but old scars unhealed And as we fall apart Out of the bleeding of hearts We cannot find anything more The sadness somehow Is old even now As it was when you waked though that door The violent ocean Might give the notion That love is a masterful storm But as we remain A part of this game From that now the calmness is born. 18 May 1975 8. THE HEAVIEST STONE The window is open Dm - Am All the night through Dm - Am The earth it eclipses Dm - C The moon in review Em7 - Am The conquest of nations Cannot lend a hand I'm cold here and lonely A desert island The weight of these years Of being alone In silence remains The heaviest stone. 27 May 1975 9. THE SONG JUST FADES AWAY you sit by the window and look at the view you ask in god's name what you're going to do the silence it shatters the love you once knew now you're alone you'd give all you have for someone to come and help you to help you along you try to remember the words to the song that once you had sung and now you are lost in your own little room you stare at the walls and you pray to the moon and everything's true that the singer would say the song it just fades away the song it just fades away all of your choices are there before you you see in the mirror the fading of youth you'd like to escape but don't know what to do it's hard to get through the byways are many just try to be sure which one you want to be yours you know that there's sadness in time's dismal lure so how much in love and now you are lost in your own little room you stare at the walls and you pray to the moon and everything's true that the singer would say the song it just fades away the song it just fades away 5 Oct 1975 10. IS IT LOVE See these lovers holding hands G No more children as they laugh C No more children as they glance D7 Deep into each others eyes G Wandering what they'll see inside C "Is there room for us to hide?" G "It is lovely here inside." D7 - G They are riding on a wave Joyously the time goes by They are dreaming in their youth As they hold each other tight Wandering what it's like inside "Is there room for us to hide?" "It is lovely here inside." Suddenly it disappears And the dream's shattered to fears They are standing far apart "What is life save broken hearts?" So they creep away inside Much into their separate cells Their own paradise in hell... They remember then their youth What they thought they had was good "Why are things falling apart - Where is all the love we had Wondering what we'd see inside Here inside each other's eyes - Is it love makes us despise?" 18 July 1976 11. MURIELLE Murielle Am the night is cold the empty caverns of your room C tell you that you're all alone Em the music on the radio Dm is black as blackest night will go G7 to get you through despair somehow Am o murielle C where are you now the dreams you had are all gone now Em life has turned into a bleak shadow Dm - C o murielle this love you had for everything upon this world why has it all turned into hate for sure life didn't treat you bad the love and all the friends you had why then did you go away o murielle why didn't you stay the dreams you had are all gone now life has turned into a bleak shadow murielle come back to me I've been searching all the empty streets where once we walked were full of joy why did you go I cannot say if it is me I'll make amends o murielle where are you now the dreams we had are all gone now life has turned into a bleak shadow 15 Aug 76 12. LOVE IS JUST A GAME You told me on that day you couldn't stay That once the love we had has all now gone away I didn't understand but then how could I have I felt like I was looking at my grave But looking back we see the universe And see ourselves so small beneath its curse That is the motion of the lies we keep Within the waking of our lonely sleep Refr. Love is just a game that lovers play And lonely men just dream their lives away Hoping that one day they may be free Of their empty insecurity They see the situation of their lives Of thoughts that are no better than their lies And accepting in their fear here they wait For the day where they might win love's true debate So here they find themselves so all alone Dreaming of the past which in they roam Waiting for the perfect dream to come And shine upon them like a blazing sun Refr. So here they find... reprise 4 Oct 1976 13. LOVE WHERE ARE YOU NOW Softly as the wind murmurs Em - D rattling windows howling words Em - D emptiness pervades my universe Em - D love where are you now G - D - Em love where are you now G - D - Em Since you left I've been alone life is sung in monotone windows barred against the storm love where are you now love where are you now A candle flickers no one moves if we exist...is this the proof here we take these lies as truth love where are you now love where are you now Days they pass these are the rounds once we're up it's then we're down all who see just wear a frown love where are you now love where are you now Are these the notions of our lives once we're happy to despise what we have, illusion's lies love where are you now love where are you now 10 Oct 76 14. SILVER MORNING It was on a silver morning Just past the break of day The sun shone through my window My thoughts turned far away To when my life was younger In springtime like today I met a fair young maiden Who stole my heart away I was with her every morning Every night and every day We sat here by this window Throwing dreams away And feeling so much bolder Than e're we were that day O how I loved that maiden Who stole my heart away I woke up one cold morning Before the break of day I looked out of the window To see her steal away AT that my heart grew colder And ever since that day I've cursed that cruel young maiden Who stole my heart away. 76/77 15. FEELING HIGH or THAT'S THE WAY IT IS WITH LOVE feeling high or feeling low C9 - D going fast or going slow C9 - D everybody says they know C9 - D that's the way it always is with love Em - A7 - D when i met you you were shy now you come on like a tri- plane at a hundred mi- les an hour feeling fine don't you think you better slow down Bm - F#m before you burn up all the town Bm - A - E - D verse 1 verse 2 instrumental ref verse 1 out 3 april 1977 16. DARK EYED WOMAN OF THE MOON She's running from the devil every day and every night She thinks that she is Salome but something isn't right She does the dance of seven veils before each lover's eyes Then curls about them like a cat and kills them with her lies Dark-eyed woman of the moon The time you don't want has come too soon To run away, you run nowhere You find that it's your own life that apart you tear She goes to every gathering in heigh society She's friends with princes and with kings and knows each personally With a penchant for the faster life she tears the town apart And all she asks from every lover is to sacrifice his heart Refr. She loves the more expensive things she gets them any way But where she gets the money never will she say Her beauty's so magnificent she hypnotizes all From beggar right up to a king she loves to see them fall Refr. The deepest secret that she hold's a fear to be alone She knows the truth that's in her soul to suicide is prone So she tries to hide within this life of high intensity Only finding that out there she's never ever free Refr. Verses D D A7 G - D Refr. G - D G - D A7 - D Em - Bm/Em - D 31 May 1977 17. AND YOU FINALLY REALIZED And you finally realized D - Em As you clawed out my eyes Em - D That you didn't really care D - Em That you cannot kiss despair Em - D And you cannot run away - D - Em God isn't there another way? A7 - D So you tear at everyone That might lend a helping hand Pushing all the love aside Let hate take you for a ride That's the way it is with pride Now there's no place left to hide Fair or not it is there I'm no pawn so beware One cold morning I'll be gone And you'll be the lonely one Remembering all you've said and done Do you really give a damn? 26 March 77 18. YOUTH or DAYS OF '70 we knew it was too easy the life we thought we led the drinking and the loving so many good times to be had we were kings inside our castle in luxury confined never thinking of the future in reality we were blind and now that we are older it's not as easy as we thought the things we cherished then were hardly to be caught we thought our youth was tragic romantics in our minds from Istanbul to Paris our dreams were so refined and now that we are older etc (Verse 1 and 2 repeat and out) 7 Oct 1977 19. SICILY Drinking the wine of Sicily C - D - G and sitting upon the beach C - D - G watching lonely fishermen Em - C - D steer their boats out of reach C - (D) - G Watching the clouds glide over us through the clear blue sky knowing that their mystery is a part of you and I You and I together here where silence is our mead words can never yet suffice where love fills every need Drinking the wine...etc I look into your eyes and see reflected deep therein everything I'd ever want within all perfect things Drinking the wine etc 12 January 1978 20. TRUTH There's the truth for the knowledge we're yearning There's time for reflection and learning There's much more to life than for earning The money to keep our pride burning Trying to hold on till we're under It's worry that drags us asunder So don't be afraid of the thunder It hurts even more when you blunder We all want the same thing that others Might want in a quite different way Our paths they might cross but it's different Somehow it's always the same So listen to me don't you worry The wheel of our lives is in motion Where it will stop that's our fortune There's nothing to do but to live Em - Am G - C/G - D Am - G C - G - D (Am) 29 May 1978 22. ONE TOO MANY MORNING (With apologies to Robert Zimmerman) The wind it howls so empty And the rain it beats so cold I'm lost between the bottle And a life I can't control I'm sick and tired of running But I'm running more and more And it's one too many mornings And I don't know what it's for Through the damp and dirty windows I'm staring at the road Where so few of us are walking It's too hard to carry the load And the seasons of this city Are falling now apart And it's one too many mornings And its tearing up my heart There's the pain that nothing matters There's the pain that no one cares There's this emptiness I'm feeling On a road that leads nowhere There's the empty silent chatter Of my voice against these walls And it's one too many mornings That the blade's refused to fall 27 Sep 1978 23. SOMETIMES Sometimes you wake up early and sometimes you wake up late sometimes a simple party becomes a great debate sometimes its even music that makes or breaks a date what I mean to say, it's living it's all a twist of fate Sometimes the wind blows stronger and sometimes the wind blows low sometimes you'll even be on a sailboat you've got to row and sometimes the music gets you whether fast or going slow sometimes the living's easy and sometimes it's all for show Sometimes the bed is creaking sometimes you just can't sleep sometimes you'll end up running with nothing beneath your feet But whether or not it's worth it depends if you repeat So life is never empty in fact it's all too deep. 17 June 1979 24. THE LOVE THAT WE SHARED Dm A7 Dm The love that we shared the relationship dared Dm A7 D#m it all flew away with the fable that lay Ddim D#m deep in our hears what we shared fell apart A7 Dm now i write you this song hoping to appease wrong D - A7-Dm through the rain how it fell everything went so well what is this i can't tell even love torments hell there's this emptiness now through a shadow somehow is it truly this real or a dream that i feel upon the bed where we slept how that last night you wept even roses have thorns that's what you said you did not want to leave there would be no reprieve still you left me alone suddenly hard as stone many years have now passed love has been just a fast like a holy man lost i have prayed to the frost with the blood on the vine slowly passing through time with no separate ideals sometimes love's just too real. 20 august 1979 25. SO MANY DAYS So many days And so many tears So many ways Through so many fears The flaring of anger The tearing away What love never conquers Hate holds at bay So many reasons That fall to the side When saying I love you While trying to hide The torment collected Through suffering alone When both must be silent While throwing a stone So many regrets That shadow the fall We see neither abyss Or mountain at all With nothing ahead of us And nothing behind We search for that limbo That no one can find The eyes will be opened By blind men who see What terror it brings us When we are too free With no one to guide us And no one to care Whatever we have Is all on a dare Those bountiful shadows That some call obscene Refuses to deter Whatever they mean From windows to vio- lent reformations To perfect conceptions That help no one dream Whatever we do Whatever we don't The game in perfection Like love is a wound That throughout the rain Will stain with the blood Of innocent virgins That drag you through mud Accepting the poison That each of us drinks With perfect acceptance Refusing the link That violates passion And undermines doors Where walls only anchor What wasn't before So many failings And so many binds So much rehearsal With so little time So much refusal That...Well never mind So many reasons We never can find So hard the distance Between lover's eyes So hard the solitude They despise But sometimes the silence Is there for the good Sometimes the anger Is love's hard earned truth. 13-16 Oct 79 26. IT'S WHATEVER WE NOTICE It's whatever we notice D7 - G It's whatever we see D7 - G It's whatever will haunt us D7 - G In a deep mystery A7 - D It's for love that we hunger It's though love that we feast It's through love that we explore Whatever we please (C - D7) It's the time that we're spending It's the time we accept It's the time that we master When it commands our respect But love ever after And love that is here Will hold us together Year after year There's violence somewhere The need to appease The hunger and sadness And too much disease But love always gathers The truth to itself Whatever love brings us Will always be felt So lady come to me And hold me so tight I'll follow you always We'll search for the light That burns in the distance But not very far It's love that will bring us To that distant star.
