Importing by Mail

For Canadian Immigrants – Sending your personal effects to Canada

If you move to Canada from another country, you don’t have to pay duty or taxes on the personal possessions you bring with you.

However, when these goods arrive in Canada by mail, the CBSA may mistakenly assess duty and taxes on them.

If this happens, you have two options:

  1. Return the mail item to the CBSA for a reassessment.
  2. For immediate delivery of the item: pay the amount indicated on Form E14 attached to the item when it is delivered by Canada Post and apply for an adjustment.

Canada Post’’s CAN$5 handling fee will be refunded if it is determined that the goods should have been duty free and tax exempt at the time of importation.

However, this handling fee will not be refunded on Priority Courier items.

As well, the CBSA will not refund any broker’s fees or shipping and handling costs.
