Major Projects (Air)

This directorate is responsible for the following major Air procurements:

Maritime Helicopter Project

The primary objective of the Maritime Helicopter Project (MHP) is to replace the aging fleet of Sea King helicopters by acquiring 28 fully integrated helicopters with mission systems installed and related ship modifications. The Project also includes provision of long-term In-Service Support (ISS) for the maritime helicopters until March 31, 2028. The ISS contract includes the construction of a training facility and the provision of simulators and a training suite.

Medium-to Heavy-Lift Helicopter Project

The primary objective of the Medium-to Heavy-Lift Helicopter (MHLH) Project is to provide the Canadian Forces with medium-to-heavy-lift helicopters to move personnel and equipment by air to meet a wide range of government-mandated tasks to support special domestic, global and in-theatre lift operations by acquiring 15 new medium-to-heavy-lift helicopters. The Project also includes the provision of ISS for an initial 20-year period with an option to extend the ISS beyond the initial 20 years to the life expectancy of the helicopters.

Operational Training System Provider Initiative

The primary objective of the initiative is to deliver an Aircrew training program for the future fleets of C-130J Hercules Airplanes and the CH-47 Chinook Helicopters. The initiative also includes the provision of ISS for an initial 20-year period with an option to extend the ISS beyond the initial 20 years to the life expectancy of the Aircraft fleets.

Airlift Capability Project - Tactical

The objective of the Airlift Capability Project – Tactical is to ensure a continued tactical airlift capability. Tactical airlift acts as a lifeline for deployed forces, transporting equipment, troop and supplies to, within and from a theatre of operations. Canada has procured seventeen C-130J aircraft from Lockheed Martin Corporation in Marietta, Georgia, that have all been delivered between 2010 and 2012. The Project also includes the provision of ISS for an initial 20-year period with an option to extend the ISS beyond the initial 20 years to the life expectancy of the aircraft.
