Project description
A weakness in the bedrock of the Arch No. 3 structure of the Chaudiere Crossing was identified during a planned inspection. To ensure the safety of users, 2 lanes have been closed while analysis continues.
Given this recently identified weakness, options are being analyzed and a solution will be found in consultation with stakeholders. Preliminary results show that the Arch No. 3 structure will require significant work, including rehabilitation or a possible replacement. Depending on the solution, the work could take 2 years to complete.
Once a solution has been identified, details on the type of project selected, its estimated value and the timelines will be available on this webpage.
Public Services and Procurement Canada will continue to engage and collaborate with the cities of Gatineau and Ottawa throughout this process.

Key milestones
- The weakness in the bedrock was identified on October 3, 2017. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) took immediate action to ensure the safety of Arch No. 3 users and closed the structure
- Details of the project (rehabilitation or replacement) will be determined before the start of winter 2017
Project background
- The Chaudiere Crossing is a complex structure consisting of 8 components crossing the Ottawa River between the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau
- The various components of the crossing were built between 1826 and 1956
- Several rehabilitation projects have been carried out on the crossing throughout the years, with the last major rehabilitation of the affected portion being completed in 2010
- On October 3, 2017, PSPC closed the Arch No. 3 structure of the Chaudiere Crossing to the public, as part of precautionary measures following an inspection that identified a weakness in the bedrock
- One lane of traffic remains open in both directions on the Hull Causeway Bridge
