Project description
Major repairs to the Supreme Court of Canada Building will include fully restoring its structure while preserving its heritage. The project includes:
- the removal of asbestos
- the major rehabilitation of heritage fabric, including exterior walls, windows and interior finishes
- the major rehabilitation of mechanical, electrical and life safety systems
- the modernization of information technology, multimedia and security systems
- the seismic upgrading to current building code requirements
- the interior fit-up for Supreme Court of Canada Building occupants
When completed in 2028, the Supreme Court of Canada Building will provide a modernized workplace that meets current building code requirements, as well as health, safety, seismic, security, environmental and accessibility standards.

The major repairs will preserve the iconic building for generations. The repairs will also bring the building to the latest health and safety standards for its occupants and visitors. It will be as modern and green as possible, while respecting its heritage designation.
The project will bring local and national economic benefits. Many jobs will be created in the construction materials, manufacturing and professional services industries.
Project background
- The Supreme Court of Canada Building was built from 1938 to 1940
- This will be the first time the building undergoes such important and extensive rehabilitation work
- The building houses the Supreme Court of Canada, its judges and staff, as well as a courtroom and judge’s chamber for the Federal Court of Appeal and the Federal Court, respectively
- The rehabilitation of the West Memorial Building is the first phase of this project since that building will need to temporarily accommodate occupants and users of the Supreme Court of Canada Building during its rehabilitation
