New Exhibition at Library and Archives Canada Celebrates Hans Christian Andersen

Ottawa, November 1, 2005 - Remember The Ugly Duckling or The Little Mermaid? What child has not been transported to a world of dreams and fantasies by these fairytales authored by Hans Christian Andersen?

To mark Children's Book Week and to celebrate the bi-centenary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth, Library and Archives Canada in collaboration with the Embassy of Denmark, presents Hans Christian Andersen 2005, a travelling exhibition honouring the life and works of this famous Danish author. The exhibition consists of 20 panels and tells the story of Andersen's life in pictures and documents including letters, portraits and personal belongings. This must-see travelling exhibition is part of a worldwide celebration endorsed by the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Bicentenary Foundation.

"Through his stories, plays, poems, Hans Christian Andersen has enchanted the lives of millions of children of all ages," said Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "Library and Archives Canada is proud to host this wonderful exhibition celebrating the life of an acclaimed author."

Hans Christian Andersen 2005 will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. until December 23, 2005, in the east and west corridors near the main entrance at Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa. Admission is free.
