Former RCMP Security Service File on René Lévesque Now Available

Ottawa, November 1, 2007 - The Canadian government's file concerning René Lévesque is now available for consultation on the Website of Library and Archives Canada (LAC). It contains documents from 1949 to 1984 that originate primarily from the archives of the former Security Service of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The documents were transferred to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service when it was established in July 1984. Certain content has not been reproduced because it is subject to the Copyright Act or it has been exempted under the Access to Information Act as it relates to the detection, prevention or suppression of subversive or hostile activities. The documents subject to the copyright restriction contain the following statement: "The text/image of this article/letter is not reproduced because of copyright restrictions". The actual information subject to the copyright and/or Access to Information restrictions has been shaded.

LAC provides access to this file as part of its mandate to preserve the documentary and political heritage of the Government of Canada and make it available to Canadians. LAC serves as the continuing memory of the federal government and provides one-stop access for information concerning Canada's political culture. The organization works closely with other institutions to collect and share this information as widely as possible.
