OTTAWA – December 4, 2008 - Library and Archives Canada, in collaboration with the National Library of Ireland, is pleased to present Dubliners: Photographs from the National Library of Ireland. This exhibition showcases candid photographs of daily life in the heart of Ireland's capital between 1897 and 1904.
The photographs were taken by John J. Clarke (1879-1961) of Castleblaney, County Monaghan. Unlike other Irish photographers of this era, Clarke produced intimate studies of the people of Dublin, with popular buildings and locations serving as backdrops. The images are remarkable not only from a technical perspective but also because of Clarke's modern, photojournalistic approach to his subjects. Even by 21st-century standards, his ability to capture real life on camera was truly outstanding.
