New Exhibition Reflecting the Uniqueness of the
Inuit Experience of Residential Schools Launched
at Library and Archives Canada

For immediate release

OTTAWA, March 4, 2009 — Library and Archives Canada, in partnership with the Legacy of Hope Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, held the official opening of the exhibition entitled "We were so far away...": The Inuit Experience of Residential Schools today at 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, Ontario.

The exhibition presents the residential school experience through the voices of eight courageous Inuit Survivors. Their voices have now been heard and will continue to educate future generations about this period in Canadian history.

"It's with great pride that we present, in partnership with the Legacy of Hope Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, this exhibition on residential schools," said Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "We were so far away...": The Inuit Experience of Residential Schools contributes to our understanding of our history.

The partnership between Library and Archives Canada, the Legacy of Hope Foundation, and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, follows the highly successful multi-year project, Where Are the Children? Healing the Legacy of the Residential Schools which was developed and managed by Library and Archives Canada and the Legacy of Hope Foundation.
