Africville: A Community Displaced

Africville, a small community in Nova Scotia populated entirely by Black families, was ordered destroyed and its residents relocated when the nearby city of Halifax seized the land in 1965. In Photographs you will find a pictorial review of the community of Africville—the faces and homes of its inhabitants, and their treatment by the City of Halifax at the time of forced eviction—through the photographs of Ted Grant. Under History you will find a history of Africville as remembered by the people of the community, written by Irvine Carvery, who grew up there and saw its destruction as a young boy. Documents contains a report written for the mayor of Halifax in 1963 by Dr. Albert Rose, under the auspices of the Halifax Human Rights Advisory Committee, with his recommendations regarding the future of Africville.
