The records of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs' Red and Black Series are an incredible historical resource. They contain information pertaining to all aspects of human history, culture and language, exploration and land settlement, and resource development. They also provide documentation of the vast changes that took place in the Canadian federal government between 1872 and 1923. The remaining Red Series and the entire Black Series will be digitized in the upcoming year and added to this database.

Ship - Empress of Ireland (Thematic Guide)
This guide consists of specific references to sources on the Empress of Ireland. The Empress of Ireland was launched in 1906 and had a fine reputation as one of Canadian Pacific's most luxurious ships. On May 29, 1914, it struck the Norwegian collier S.S. Storstad and sank within fifteen minutes. Over 1,000 people were lost and it remains one of the worst shipping disasters in Canadian history.

Soldiers of the First World War - CEF
Over 600,000 Canadians enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War (1914-1918). The CEF database is an index to those personnel files, which are held by Library and Archives Canada. To date, over 800,000 images of Attestation papers have been scanned and are being made available on-line.

Soldiers of the South African War, 1899 - 1902
The South African War, 1899-1902, is a key event in the military history of Canada. It marked the first occasion for which Canada dispatched troops to an overseas war. A total of 7,368 Canadians and 12 Nursing Sisters served in South Africa. This research tool brings together three groups of records pertaining to the South African War: the service files, medal registers and land grant applications.

Treaty 8: 1899-1999
First negotiated in late June 1899, Treaty 8 embraced an area in northwestern Canada. It was not only the largest land settlement undertaken by the Canadian government with First Nations, but also the first to recognize that the "aboriginal title" of Indians and Métis are co-existent.

Upper Canada and Canada West Naturalization Records
Before 1947, foreigners could petition for naturalization. Library and Archives Canada holds several naturalization registers for Upper Canada/Canada West (now Ontario), for the years 1828 to 1850 only, organized by year within each county. This research tool contains 3,344 references.

War Diaries of the First World War
This database contains the digitised War Diaries of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) units. From the start of the First World War, CEF units were required to maintain a daily account of their “Actions in the Field.” This log was called a War Diary. The War Diaries are not personal diaries, rather they are a historical record of a unit's administration, operations and activities during the First World War.
