As November 11th, 2008 marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War Library and Archives Canada is proud to present a message from Veterans Affairs Canada:
Ninety years ago, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the guns of the First World War went silent. On November 11, 2008, Canada remembers the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
Canada's contribution to the First World War helped define Canada as a nation and shape the country in which we live today. The 90th anniversary honours not only those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but the Veterans who returned to use the courage and strength they had shown on the battlefield to help build our nation.
Today, we honour more than ninety years of tradition. The values for which Canadians fought during the First World War are the same values Canada's military men and women are currently fighting to protect.
Our government is investing in the equipment and resources our men and women in uniform need to do their job, to build a modern and cohesive Canadian Forces and to defend our sovereignty.
Ninety years ago, as the Allies made their plans for winning the war; Canada was at the forefront of many of the final great battles. Canada played a prominent role in the final days of the First World War from August 8 to the signing of the armistice on November 11, a period now known in Canada as "The Last Hundred Days."
Today, Canada is re-emerging as a strong and powerful voice on the world stage.
Veterans helped build the peaceful, prosperous nation that Canada is today. They gave everything they had for everything we have. It is now up to Canada's youth to carry the torch of remembrance. All Canadians can get involved by learning more about the First World War and by participating in commemorative events. For more information, visit www.vac-acc.gc.ca.
