Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Systems

Procedures for Becoming an EDI Client

The CBSA offers a variety of electronic data interchange (EDI) services that tailor to different clients.  The following is a step-by-step guide for becoming an EDI client.

Where to Start

Before transmitting EDI, it is important for potential clients to determine exactly what type of data they would like to send and/or receive.  The needs of a customs broker will differ from that of a warehouse, importer, or marine carrier.  For a better understanding of the applications available and the type of data involved, please review:

Communication Methods

Once clients determine which applications best meet their requirements, they then decide on the type of connection, or communication method, to establish between themselves and the CBSA.

Software/Service Providers

Clients may choose to use a service and/or software provider to transmit their data to and from CBSA.  As well, there are specific software providers who can provide clients with the required software to use the applications on their own.

Please note that the CBSA does not charge fees to transmit EDI (except when a client chooses to use a Direct Connect connection).  However, one can expect the providers to charge for their services.

Applying for EDI

  1. Decide upon the communication method and the choice of software/service provider.
  2. Fill out the appropriate application form. For each EDI application there is a separate application form which can be found in their Electronic Commerce Client Requirements Document (ECCRD).
  3. Fax completed application form to the Electronic Commerce Unit at
    (613) 952-9979.
