Remediation of Contaminated Sites
The Government of Canada is actively involved in environmental remediation across Canada. The Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan has been established with commitments of $3.5 billion in spending over the next 15 years to the remediation of federal contaminated sites and $500 million directed towards shared responsibility sites. For example, Public Works and Government Services Canada is working with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs to provide technical support for the cleanup of several abandoned gold mines in the Northwest Territories and former Distant Early Warning (DEW) military sites in Nunavut.
