Civil Fingerprint Screening Services (CFSS) provides fingerprint-based criminal record searches for non-criminal purposes. Searches are performed against the central repository of Canadian criminal records held by the RCMP, and the results are "certified".
CFSS processes more than 15,000 criminal record searches each month. The processing time is currently in excess of one hundred and twenty (120) days from receipt of an application. Note that processing time can vary due to incoming workloads.
CFSS is responsible for processing criminal record search results only, and plays no role in the decision making process relating to the purpose of an application.
In accordance with the Criminal Records Act , applicants for paid or volunteer work with " vulnerable persons " must commence the process for obtaining a criminal records verification at a local police service and not at a privately operating fingerprinting firm.
