Be Aware and Stay Safe

People who dream about winning a million dollars don’t often think of the down side.

Woman with money

Relatives want to share the wealth. Distant friends get in touch. Complete strangers offer ideas about how to spend your money.

You have to think about locking doors and keeping your money safe.

Here are some tips to protect you from becoming a victim of crime.

You could be a target if:

  • You are elderly and living alone.
  • You are dependent on your family because of your age or health.
  • You are cut off from other people.
  • Your new wealth is widely known.
  • You are not used to dealing with pushy people.

What can you do?

  • Watch out for people who offer you prizes, special deals or ways to spend your money.
  • Find out about the person before you agree to anything.
  • Don’t let people press you into doing something quickly. Good business people will give you time to make up your mind.
  • Ask for something in writing before you make a decision.
  • If you are worried, speak to someone you trust — a relative, a police officer, or someone else who cares about you and your safety.
  • You can also call Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 and speak to a scam expert.
  • Talk to an advisor about how to handle your money wisely. The final choice is still yours to make.
  • Remember, your money is your business. No one else has the right to spend it for you.

How can you keep your money safe?

  • Put it in the bank, if one is nearby.
  • If you prefer to keep it at home, put it in a safe place that is known only to you.
  • Buy a strong box with a lock and key to hold your money.
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash with you.

Follow these simple safety rules, and enjoy the things that money can buy. If you have any questions, contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or your local police agency.
