Three Books on Shelf

Here are some of the suggestions that were sent in by those of you who use our kit:

We have a family reading month in the fall and in the spring. We set up a large display and as each child in our school reads a book, we record it in some manner on the display. ex.: a tree with leaves.

The Read Up On It poster makes a wonderful book cover for school books.

R.I.O.T. or Reading Instead of Television. The children are encouraged to read instead of watching television and the class that reads the most minutes ... wins the afternoon off: skating with the school principal and a yummy treat.

Children rush into the recreation room and choose books borrowed from the local library. Parents and other volunteers ask the children if they would like "book buddies". Then everyone gets ready to share some great children's stories. Some children read with one another and some read by themselves. The focus is always on fun, and books are the focal point [of the Reading Circle program].

Reward time spent reading, not the number of books read. We want children to get into the habit of reading, ex. 10-15 minutes per day.
