À 29 ans, alors que ses fils étaient en âge d'aller à l'école, l'illustratrice Janet Wilson a décidé de devenir artiste professionnelle. Elle s'est inscrite au Collège des beaux-arts de l'Ontario, où elle a travaillé ferme. Ses efforts ont été récompensés lorsque l'éditeur Scholastic lui a offert de produire son premier livre d'images. L'idée de faire des livres d'images ne lui avait jamais effleuré l'esprit, et elle a trouvé son premier travail, qui demandait 32 illustrations, plus exigeant qu'elle ne l'avait prévu. Elle a appris à « écouter » les contes sur lesquels elle travaillait afin d'être bien certaine que son interprétation était dans la bonne voie. Ayant à son actif de nombreux livres d'images, elle est reconnue pour ses peintures réalistes, qui saisissent les sentiments et les humeurs des personnages des récits qu'elle illustre.
