Lieu de naissance : Cheshire (Angleterre) Tim Wynne-Jones est né en Angleterre, a été élevé en Colombie-Britannique et en Ontario, et a étudié à l'Université de Waterloo et à l'Université York. Sa carrière d'écrivain a débuté avec l'attribution du prix du roman Seal First, d'une valeur de 50 000 $. L'ouvrage primé était Odd's End, un livre qu'il a écrit en cinq semaines tout juste après avoir terminé l'université, pour occuper son temps pendant le séjour de sa femme en Californie. Depuis, il a écrit et traduit divers livres d'images et créé quatre œuvres de fiction pour enfants et jeunes adultes, deux autres romans pour adultes, plusieurs dramatiques radiophoniques, une comédie musicale pour enfants, un livret d'opéra, des nouvelles et des chansons pour l'émission de télévision Fraggle Rock. Après son séjour à titre d'écrivain en résidence à la bibliothèque publique de Perth, en 1988, il s'est installé avec sa femme, Amanda Lewis (avec qui il a écrit le livre pour enfants Rosie Backstage) et leurs trois enfants, dans un magnifique paysage rural de l'Est de l'Ontario. Bien qu'il ne modèle pas ses personnages fictifs sur les membres de sa famille, la présence de ses enfants le met en contact avec l'enfant en lui.
