Selection criteria for Read Up On It

Books recently published in Canada or abroad, in the past five years, for which the author or illustrator is Canadian.

Books available through bookstores, publishers, and public or school libraries.

Books in English or French that take into account the geographic distribution and multicultural diversity of Canada.

Books suitable for age categories ranging from 2 to 16 years.

Books from the following genres: novel, short story, picture book, non-fiction.

Books in which the high quality text and illustrations interact effectively.

Children's Literature Service

The Children's Literature Service at Library and Archives Canada consists of more than 160,000 books of fiction and non-fiction, published in French, English and other languages. Of interest to children and teenagers up to 16 years of age, this complete collection of Canadian works traces the history of children's books in Canada. This world-class collection holds the works of Canadian children's writers and illustrators, literary archives, manuscripts, correspondence and original illustrations, which significantly enhances its value as a reference collection.

Learning Centre

The Learning Centre allows Library and Archives Canada to open its vaults to all Canadians by making some of Canada's treasures available online and through on-site programming. Students gain access to material that will enrich their learning experience. Teachers and students will find websites, educational resources, thematic study guides and digitized primary sources (printed documents, diaries, maps, illustrations, paintings, manuscripts, and printed and recorded music) from its holdings. These resources stimulate the imaginations of students and develop their critical thinking skills, as well as help teachers make Canadian history, literature and music come to life.
