Fred and his father go ice fishing. At first, not very excited about this trip, Fred imagines that he and his father have become Inuit of the North Pole; even their cat Rick, who stowed away in the car, is an Arctic fox. When the ice suddenly cracks, Fred finds himself alone in the fishing shack on a drifting ice floe. Throughout the night, Fred will have to face the cold, hunger and isolation while waiting to be rescued. His fishing trip becomes a rite of passage for the young boy.
