During a prairie snowstorm, a young boy tumbles from his family's wagon, and is rescued by a mysterious stranger (Louis Riel) on horseback. The two spend a couple of days together, talking and waiting for the storm to pass. Storm at Batoche blends fiction and fact, and examines the nature of friendship. Written by award-winning author Maxine Trottier, and illustrated by John Mantha, the book concludes with an author's note that provides some historical context about the life and death of Louis Riel.
