"don't try"

by Jason Gallagher

I received a letter
from the editor of a California based magazine
to whom
I had submitted work a few months earlier.
the note said
"I like your stuff
but you read too much Bukowski
find your voice and try us again"
I spent the whole day
thinking about what the editor wrote
until I eventually agreed with his point.
then I sat down to write my newest piece
it's called
'screwing whores at the race track with whiskey bottles'
i'm glad
i've seen the light.
