Standing on the Metro

by T. Anders Carson

Smell of incense
and onions
stickles the air.
Body heat protracted
as luscious Arab hips sway
to the bending curves of the line.
They are on their way,
home from the market,
on this Sunday afternoon.
Some to see their lovers
others to bake bread.
Some to care for
the sick uncle.
You never see them
smoke in public.
They don't have the
jagged prayer callus.
In defiance,
the elderly hold their veils
in their teeth.
It keeps them silent.
I think that when I ask for directions,
meeting their curious gaze,
they feel embarrassed and almost blush.
I keep my mouth shut
as the Arab tongue
caresses every corner
of our tram.
