Gawd, doesn't English suck. Thick
books, weird language, ancient history, odd customs. And that's just
what your teachers are telling you is the latest and greatest in
Canadian literature. ... All published before 1980.
No, TDR is not here to tell you The
Stone Angel by Margaret Lawrence will be good for you. No, we're not
going to sneak it past you that W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen The Wind
is more enlightening that 16 hours of MuchMusic back-to-back. We're most
certainly not here to tell you that Margaret Atwood represents the best
that Canadian scribblers have to offer.
What we want you to know is that
Canadian literature -- hell, any old literature -- is constantly
renewed. And it's being renewed right now. And you can be a part of it.
How?
a) Hang out. Go to events.
Drink coffee. Feel literary all over.
b) Do research. Search out new authors.
Find someone who's doing something that startles you. You can start by
reading the interviews on this
site.
c) Read. Lots of different things. Ask
your librarian for books they've never heard of. Print off reviews
from this site and ask, "How come you're not ordering books like
this?"
d) Write. Experiment. Take risks. Tell
stories in new and brilliant ways.
e) Submit.
Not just here, everywhere.
f) Do more research. Do more reading.
Do more writing. Rinse and repeat.
