All About Us

  A lovely thing to see:
        through the paper window's hole,
                the Galaxy
                        - Issa

Educational Insights is a peer-reviewed electronic journal sponsored by the Centre for Cross Faculty Inquiry (formerly the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction), Faculty of Education, at the University of British Columbia. Our location however, resides in the practices, theories, ambitions and dreams of our Editorial Circle, who are scholars and educators from across Canada, and into the United States. (See Editorial Circle).

The Editorial Circle, curriculum theorists, writers, and pedagogical adventurers, are presently repositioning Educational Insights as an innovative evocative provocative intertextual space for engaging in new dialogues of enRapturing con/texts and reimagining spaces of pedagogy, inquiry, and interdisciplinarity. Our intent is to encourage a community that honours difference and polyphony, while sharing a vision of pedagogy, education, inquiry as spaces of challenge and hopeful conversations.

Educational Insights originated in 1990 as a publishing venue for graduate students. In 1995, co-editors, Gary Rasberry and David Penberg, moved the journal from hard copy to cyberspace, a decision which has proven prophetic in terms of 21st century communications and hermeneutic meaning-making. While the initial journal issues were limited to linear text presentation, there is now the opportunity to explore pedagogical and curricular positioning through sound, video, non-linear and performative text. In celebration of the 25th year of the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction, Director Karen Meyer proposed that Educational Insights be imagined anew as an international journal open to all scholars whose work encourages new ways of envisioning educational issues, pedagogy, curriculum, inquiry, and interdisciplinarity.

Educational Insights Course Offering

Graduate students currently matriculating at University of British Columbia's Faculty of Education are encouraged to join the Educational Insights adventure through an exciting and thought-provoking six credit course leading to the journal's publication.

An additional one-year commitment beyond the course is appreciated but not required. The editorial and production work includes:

  • Engaging in Educational discourses
  • Screening manuscripts
  • Reading and critiquing manuscripts in preparation for the Editorial Circle's consideration
  • meeting once a week (usually 2.5 hours)
  • Editorial work on manuscripts after they have been accepted for on-line publication
  • working collaboratively to bring an issue to publication.

Beyond the manuscript-related activities, the team is also responsible for coordinating production, meeting with potential writers, taking responsibility for individual special issues.

We invite you to join us in this exciting work!
