Aboriginal Studies Librarian and Aboriginal Portal Project Leader

The University of Saskatchewan Library invites applications for the position of Aboriginal Studies Librarian and Aboriginal Portal Project Leader.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Aboriginal Studies Librarian will support the University's Aboriginal initiatives by providing leadership in the Library's Aboriginal Portal project. The Aboriginal Portal will be a website that aggregates all the University of Saskatchewan's resources and services in support of First Nations/Aboriginal scholarship and teaching, provides innovative tools for scholarship and collaborative activities and presents links to existing scholarship and creates new scholarly resources in digital form. The Aboriginal Studies Librarian will also be responsible for the development of the Library's other collections and services in support of Native Studies in the Main Library either directly or in collaboration with other librarians.
The position will directly support the work of the Anthropology, Economics, History, Native Studies, Political Studies and Sociology departments as well as the interdisciplinary Aboriginal Justice and Criminology Program. The Aboriginal Studies Librarian will also collaborate with librarians in the branch libraries such as Law, Education and Health Sciences who support First Nations and aboriginal activities in those disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A MLS degree from an accredited library school or equivalent postgraduate library degree or qualification from a university or institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan and a degree, preferably in native studies, or a degree in the humanities, social sciences or other discipline with a concentration in aboriginal studies; one to three years experience developing thesauri, controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, ontologies, and/or indexing strategies for online information systems; demonstrated familiarity and experience with databases and metadata schema such as MARC, TEI, EAD, DC or OAI; demonstrated experience leading, coordinating and supervising line organizational units and/or project teams; a proven service orientation; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and a demonstrated ability to work independently. The ability to work collaboratively with several different constituencies and knowledge of Cree, Dene or another indigenous language would be considered assets.

STRUCTURE OF THE POSITION: This is a permanent appointment at the University of Saskatchewan Library, subject to a probationary period of three years to five years.

Salary and Rank: Librarians are members of the U of S Faculty Association and terms and conditions of work are determined by the Collective Agreement between the Association and the University. The position is available immediately and will be filled at the rank of the Librarian II or III. The current salary range is $44,912 - $71,776 and is under review. Actual salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
