Dumont falls short in leadership bid

Chartrand survives election appeal

Former Lieutenant Governor General Yvon Dumont saw his hopes to unseat incumbent MMF president David Chartrand evaporate during last month's election as his southern base of voting support failed to overcome Chartrand's strong northern presence.

And Dumont's bid to challenge the ballot figures was also rebuffed when former associate justice Alan Hamilton, the MMF's chief electoral officer, upheld the official results.

The win was a vindication for Chartrand, who was often forced to fend off Dumont's negative publicity tactics during the campaign and several head to head debates.

"During this campaign I heard our Metis priorities that we will continue to address over the next term, such as our culture, communications, housing education and jobs."
"I also heard loud and clear that we are moving forward in the right direction in the areas of Metis Child and Family Services, co-management, justice and our other rights-based initiatives such as our land claims."
