The Poetry of Annette Dunphy

Summer’s Demise – Winter’s Butler

Where are you going so slowly now,
Where once you came so quickly?
You’re paling, waning, cooling;
Your entire face is sickly.
Just days ago, it seems anon,
How colorful, warm and splendid,
Were flowers, many, now all gone;
Replaced by leaves so bright and torrid.
Greens and reds and yellow-gold.
Have taken away all your attention.
‘Tis true, dear Summer, you’ve grown so old,
Of you, now, there is no mention.
Too soon you’re gone, oh Summer fair.
Your days much shorter than before.
Leaves brush by, upon the air.
Of you, at last, we’ll see no more.
Breath floats lingering upon the air;
It’s sad to watch your demise.
(But) with each new day will come a fair
Of sparkling, wondering eyes.
Searching your wonder, from memory,
Warmer days and sun and sand.
Only to find you’ve grown cool and airy;
You leave no heat upon the land.
We’ll question, “Where did Summer go?
Say, “We really had none at all!”
Eyes that watched Spring on the grow
Are crying, “Oh, please don’t come yet, Fall!”
Ah, but!
‘Tis Winter’s turn; it comes not subtler;
So, Summer, take your rest full due.
Autumn will just as fine be your butler,
Welcoming Winter, counterpart of you.
