Peter Leitch was born in Ottawa in 1944 and grew up in Montreal and started to play the guitar when he was 16. He and Robert Walker, the photographer featured in this issue, were friends early on, and started their under-aged treks to New York City where they'd sneak into clubs to see the bebop greats. In Canada Peter played with top players and recorded with Oscar Peterson. The Apple, however, never lost its draw and appeal as the place for a jazz player to be; he now lives there permanently with his wife Carol in an apartment in the Village - a short distance from the clubs synonymous with modern jazz: the Blue Note, the Village Gate, and the Village Vanguard. As a band leader, he has recorded 15 albums with such greats as Pepper Adams, Gary Bartz, John Hicks, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Peter Leitch is now rooted and central to the New York and North American jazz scene.

Ken Norris teaches English at the University of Maine in Orono Maine.

Simon Thompson is an English Instructor at Northwest Community College in Terrace B.C.

Robert Walker was born in Montreal on June 8, 1945. He studied painting at Sir George Williams University in Montreal and graduated in 1969 with a B.A. As a photographer he considers himself self-taught, although he did attend workshops held by Lee Friedlander in Montreal and by Gary Winogrand in New York. In 1977 Walker moved to New York and over a period of years took thousands of shots of that city, the best of which are collected in his book New York Inside Out, with a preface by the American writer William Burroughs. His work has been shown in galleries around the world. He is married to clothes designer Ania Zofia and now lives in east-end Montreal within blocks of where he grew up. A major collection of his photos is being prepared for publication by a Thames and Hudson (London). The photos of Montreal in this issue of It's Still Winter were taken from his recent exhibition called "Montreal Melancolique".

Rob Ziegler received his B.A in English and Philosophy from Penn State University, and his M.A from Bowling Green University in Ohio. He taught English at Frostburg College in Maryland before emigrating to Canada in 1969. Rob currently works in the Prince George Regional Hospital as a therapist and counsellor and is writing a book-length memoir. We see a piece from that work in this issue.
