AGAWA ROCK

inching out
along the base of a sheer rock face
with Lake Superior crashing at my back

and on the pink rock
appearing beneath my fingers
the hunger-drunk spirit drawings in
faded red ochre
of two thousand year old medicine men

pictures of fish -- canoes -- snakes -- animals -- people

-- and horned Misshepezhieu
who only moments before had lashed his tail
and brought the rain
