LITTERAE
Multilingual literary magazine

As stated in the home page, we do our best to promote Canadian Literature.  Here are some opinions about us and our site:

Margaret Atwood:
To whom it may concern,

I'm writing to recommend to your attention a magazine called Litterae. It's a wonderfully multi-lingual , multi-cultural magazine of the literary arts. As such it contributes not only to the literary arts in a general way, but also to an understanding of how art crosses linguistic, political and cultural boundaries.

I have published with Litterae myself, and consider it an important venue for exploring the international nature of literature

Sincerely,
Margaret  Atwood

To whom it may concern

Ref: Eugene Giurgiu's web site litterae.net
I feel I am most fortunate to have excerpts from my novel-in-progress published on litterae.net. Since publication, a number of writers have read the excerpts on line and offered constructive criticism. For example, well-known author Joan Barfoot has given me high praise and asked to read the completed manuscript. This only happened because the novel excerpt was available on this quality web site.

Mr. Giurgiu's ability to translate and publish a given Canadian story, currently one by Margaret Atwood, in five languages is surely a unique contribution to furthering the readership of Canadian literature within our cultural mosaic. As he has gained readership abroad,  this web site is promoting and encouraging the reading of Canadian literature on an international level

Web site hosting and updating funding for litterae.net will fulfill four important mandates. First, it will give less known authors like myself the opportunity of wider readership; secondly. it will continue to promote Canadian literature to readers within our cultural mosaic; thirdly, it will attract international readership with a focus on Canadian literature;  and fourthly, it will enhance the Canadian Arts Community as a whole

I would urge you to provide funding for this worthwhile project.

Sincerely
Linda Hutsell-Manning

Myrna Kostash:

Dear Canada Council:

I write in support of the application for assistance from the editor (s) of the on-line journal, Litterae.  I should declare an interest: Litterae has translated and posted a "Letter from Bucharest" which I wrote originally as private correspondence.

But this is also an instance of what I believe the journal does so well and so usefully: distribute free of charge on an international scale in several languages literature and commentary that all serious readers would want to hear about and to read for
themselves.

Best of all, Litterae does it by, from and about Canadian writers in particular.

As with much of such extracurricular effort, the people of Litterae have been doing it practically as volunteers. Given the strategic, as well as esthetic, importance of the activity of journals like Litterae, in a world increasingly monopolized by literary behemoths of the marketplace, we who care about Canadian writing should be scandalized that Litterae
is financially so insecure.

I urge you to support their application for funds. We will all be beneficiaries.

Sincerely,
Myrna Kostash
writer-in-residence

Baiatule, esti grozav. Cine se astepta ca tocmai un roman sa aiba o idee atat de extraordinara?  Liviu Mares, Cluj.

Your site is magnificent. Nobody had such a good idea so far. The best would be to have the same poem or short story translated into all those languages. I realize it's a hard and expensive task. Congratulation!
Evghenii Posakov, Petersburg.

Do you have a guilty feeling for poetry?  Not that I love it very much myself, but in all your site there is not a single verse.
