United Marks Anniversary Saturday at San Francisco International AirportSan Francisco February 11, 2006 - United Airlines, the world's largest transpacific airline, today celebrates more than 20 years of flying from the United States to the Asia-Pacific region and reaffirms its commitment to continued growth in the region.
By April 2006, the company will have expanded its Asia-Pacific service by nearly 15% since October 2004, with new routes and increased capacity, and plans to continue to increase service to and from the region. Expansion to date includes its launch of service between San Francisco and both Ho Chi Minh City and Nagoya, Chicago-Shanghai, Nagoya-Taipei, and additional frequencies between the United States and both Australia and Hong Kong.
"The Asia-Pacific region is among the most important to United, and has some of the fastest-growing economies in the world," said Mark Schwab, vice president-Pacific. "We are proud to have a long history of flying to the region, and our commitment to international growth has never been stronger. We have an exciting year ahead, with the return of our San Francisco-Seoul nonstop service on April 2, and our highly anticipated move to the new Star Alliance terminal at Tokyo's Narita airport in June -- which will enable smoother connections and faster transit times for our passengers."
To mark the 20-year milestone, United employees in the San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, Feb. 11, will wear traditional costumes representative of various cultures in the Asia-Pacific region. Additionally, the San Francisco team will offer media tours of United's current configurations of the B777 and B747 (including United First(R), United Business(R), Economy Plus(R) and United Economy(R)), as well as the international Red Carpet Club(R) -- which seats more than 400 customers, the International First Class Lounge and United's "Arrivals" lounge -- the only one in San Francisco.
United offers more nonstop service from San Francisco to the Asia-Pacific region than any other U.S. carrier, including to:
As previously announced, United will resume nonstop service from San Francisco to Incheon, Republic of Korea, in early April.
Service
In 2005, United carried more than 5.4 million passengers to/from or within the Asia-Pacific region. United now operates more than 400 flights a week to/from or within the region -- including service to Bangkok, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Nagoya, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Tokyo. The reach of United's network in the region is extended through its Star Alliance relationships with All Nippon Airways (ANA), Asiana Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International and Air New Zealand. Star Alliance relationships also make it possible for United customers from the Asia-Pacific to connect on to European carriers' flights to destinations throughout Europe and around the globe. In 2003, United entered into a commercial partnership with Air China that includes codesharing, frequent-flyer benefits and access to airport lounges. Together, the two carriers offer 45 code-share flights between China and the United States. Last year, they expanded the agreement to include cargo.
Presence
Approximately one quarter of United's total capacity is working in the Asia-Pacific region. United's commitment to growth in the region is underscored by its more than 2,300 employees based there, including flight attendant crew domiciles in Tokyo and Hong Kong. More than 260 of United's employees in the Asia-Pacific have more than 20 years of experience with the airline.
This is approximately 11% of United's total active staff in the region. The region is also very important to United's cargo division; its business there accounts for approximately 45% of the division's total revenue. Japan, Hong Kong, China and Australia are United Cargo's top four markets in the Pacific. In 2005, United Cargo carried 110,000 tons of freight and mail from the Asia-Pacific to the United States -- a 6% increase over 2004.
Contracts
United's connection to the Asia-Pacific region goes beyond flight service. The carrier has contracts with Korean Air for B747 heavy maintenance and with Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Corporation (Ameco Beijing) for B777 maintenance. United Services carries out specialized maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) and engine overhauls for Korean Air and Air China. United also performs line maintenance for Japan Airlines (JAL), ANA, Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA), Asiana, China Southern, Singapore and Vietnam Airlines, among others. Some of these relationships date back more than 10 years. In addition to MRO work, United Services Flight Training recently announced it has become the first provider outside of China to be certified under the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to provide "type rating training" for PRC pilots.
Awards
In 2005, United was named "Best Transpacific Airline" in the OAG Airline of the Year Awards, "Best North American Airline" by Business Traveler Asia Pacific, "Best North American Airline" by TTG Asia and "Best American Airline serving China" in the inaugural Business Traveler China travel poll.
Statement from Transport Workers Union of America on Unprovoked Attack on TWU Organizers in Philadelphia
New York February 10, 2006 - Following is a statement from the offices of the Transport Workers Union of America on the unprovoked attack on TWU organizers in Philadelphia:
Five organizers of the Transport Workers Union were brutally assaulted in Philadelphia on February 8 2006 while seeking support for TWU to represent fleet service employees at the new airline that has emerged from the merger of US Airways and America West. Local representatives of the International Association of Machinists were present at the scene of the attack and TWU is demanding to know the extent of IAM involvement in this disgraceful and criminal assault. TWU currently represents the fleet service employees at the pre-merger America West airline, while IAM represents the fleet service employees at the pre-merger US Airways airline.
"This outrageous attack," said TWU Executive Vice President (and TWU Acting President) Jim Little, was "bloody and violent retaliation" against the entirely peaceful efforts of TWU organizers.
Little said that TWU organizers had rented a room at the Airport Marriott to seek the support of Philadelphia-based US Airways fleet service employees for its organizing drive. Local Philadelphia IAM officials entered the hotel room and said that TWU had better close shop and leave because there was a mob which they could not control that would on their own shut TWU down. But the TWU representatives were not even given time to leave -- only moments after the warning, they were attacked by at least twenty-five thugs throwing chairs and glasses. All five TWU organizers were injured, two suffering serious eye injuries. While the beatings continued, the perpetrators stole TWU organizing files.
"I have been in the air labor business for many years," said. Little, "and I believe that there has not been violence on this scale in air labor affairs for close to fifty years. Wednesday's attack is a throw-back to an era that should have been closed long ago."
Little said TWU organizers have met with threats at other US Airways bases, but not actual violence. "The scale of the campaign of intimidation and violence is such that it requires a Federal investigation. Certainly, no fair election can possible by held at this merged airline until all the perpetrators and instigators of the violence and intimidation have been dealt with by the criminal justice system and, as appropriate, removed from the employ of US Airways and the IAM."
Little said that TWU would leave no stone unturned in working for the conviction of the criminals who engaged in the attack. He asked the IAM to provide whatever information it has, including whether the Local IAM representatives called hotel security or the police. He added that he is unaware that any such calls were made.
Little stated that he has always had great respect for the IAM as a national labor organization, and for its national leaders as serious labor statesmen. "We are now looking to the IAM leadership to join us by investigating this matter thoroughly and, as appropriate, purging their local ranks of any criminal element that perpetrated or instigated this attack, including by purposely permitting it to occur. We urge IAM to fully cooperate by producing all relevant testimony for all investigations into this sad and disgraceful matter, and to join with us in making certain that the world knows that the house of labor has no room for the brutality that occurred yesterday."

Royal Air Maroc Will Operate Africa's Largest Fleet of Blended Winglet Equipped Boeing 737NGs
Seattle February 12, 2006 - Casablanca-based Royal Air Maroc -- "The Wings of Morocco" -- has ordered 29 shipsets of Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets for both retrofit and new aircraft deliveries. Beginning in January and completing in late 2006, the carrier will upgrade 16 737-700s and 737-800s with Blended Winglet Technology. These performance upgrades will be accomplished at Royal Air Maroc Engineering & Maintenance Facility in Casablanca. In addition, Royal Air Maroc will take delivery of 13 shipsets as Buyer Furnished Equipment (BFE) on new 737-700s and -800s.
RAM Engineering & Maintenance center has more than 40 years of experience in aircraft maintenance, has Moroccan civil aviation approval, FAA 145 and EASA 145 certificates enabling it to maintain European and US registered airplanes as well as the RAM group of airplanes.
"This is the largest single order ever received from an operator in Africa," says Aviation Partners Boeing Director of Sales and Marketing Christopher Stafford. "APB is also very excited to be working with Royal Air Maroc to become an approved installation center for the retrofit of Blended Winglet Systems."
Having previously operated a Blended Winglet Equipped 737-800, Royal Air Maroc was sold on the benefits of this Performance Enhancing Technology. "After a trial period on one B737-800, RAM was convinced to go to a 100% Blended Winglet equipped 737 NG fleet," said Adil Messeoudi, RAM Head of Engineering. The decision was motivated by a combination of reasons including block fuel savings of up to 5%, which will save the carrier over 100,000 gallons of fuel per year per aircraft and result in a payback on the investment of less than 3 years.
Royal Air Maroc serves 40 countries, with over 1,200 flights per week. A number of long-haul routes from Casablanca -- including Libreville (2206 NM), Cairo (1990 NM) and Istanbul (1783 NM) -- will particularly benefit from the Blended Winglet Performance Enhancement.
Over 80% of new Boeing 737-700/800 aircraft delivered this year will be equipped with Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglet Systems. Currently, over 900 Blended Winglet Systems are installed and in-service on Boeing aircraft with orders and options for more than 2000 additional shipsets.
Hamburg International New Customer for Airbus A319
Toulouse February 13, 2006 - Hamburg International has become a new customer
for the Airbus A319 with an order for 14 aircraft of the type, plus another six
on option. Ten of those aircraft will replace the airline’s current fleet of
previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. Airbus will deliver the aircraft
configured in a comfortable single-class layout, seating up to 150 passengers.
The contract, announced today by Hamburg International, had already been signed
in December 2005.
Established in 1998, the Hamburg-based airline operates
on behalf of renowned tour operators as well as charter flights and addressing
other substantial niche markets like executive charters and corporate flight
operations. The airline will operate ten of the A319s on its European charter
routes as well as on dedicated international flights to Africa, Asia and the
Middle East.
Hamburg International Managing Directors Norbert Grella,
Klaus-A Schlichtmann and Christoph Von Saldern, said: "We are proudly looking
forward to carrying the name of our home base Hamburg into the world on a modern
fleet of Hamburg assembled Airbus aircraft. We believe that the renewal of our
fleet with A319 aircraft will further improve the satisfaction of our customers
in terms of comfort and flexibility to serve our niche markets."
Airbus
President and Chief Executive Officer Gustav Humbert, said: "I am particularly
delighted that Hamburg International, a well-reputed customer located in the
same city as Airbus’ biggest site in Germany, has selected the A319 for their
future fleet. This is another example that underlines the A320 Family's position
as the reference aircraft for charter and low-cost carriers worldwide. I am
confident that the superb economics and excellent passenger appeal of our
aircraft will help Hamburg International to strengthen its position as a leading
specialized niche carrier."
The A319 is a member of Airbus’ popular
fly-by-wire single-aisle family, which also includes the A318, the A320 and A321
with passenger capacities ranging from 100 to 200 seats. Airbus’ A320 Family is
the recognized technological leader in single-aisle aircraft, with advanced
features such as fuel-saving wingtip fences, weight-saving composites and the
reliability that comes from its modern design and ease of maintenance.
US Airways Mechanics Rally for Teamster Representation
Washington February 13, 2006 - US Airways mechanics from the airline's Phoenix, Las Vegas and Charlotte sites rallied at the company's headquarters in Tempe and in front of the US Airways terminal at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport to kick off a union election campaign to make the Teamsters their bargaining representative for the approximately 6,300 mechanics and related employees at the newly merged airline. Pro-Teamster workers have gathered enough employee signatures to easily meet the threshold required by law to file for an election.
"Cards have poured in," said Don Treichler, Director of the Teamsters Airline Division. "US Airways mechanics know that the Teamsters bring great contracts and strong representation for airline mechanics. Teamster contracts at Continental, UPS, AirTran and Frontier have set an industry standard for airline mechanics. These mechanics deserve the same strong representation, especially in this case where crucial workplace rights are at stake. In particular, under a Teamster contract they will retain 100 percent of their seniority."
America West Airlines and US Airways merged to form the fifth-largest air carrier in the country in late September. The Teamsters represent about 900 mechanics at former America West sites, while the International Association of Machinists (IAM) represents about 5,400 at the original US Airways sites, according to company records.
The mechanics' key issues are outsourcing of heavy maintenance work, job security, seniority, and their right to a voice in their union and workplace - - as well as major giveaways in the IAM contract, bargained with US Airways under bankruptcy conditions.
"This election is about two major goals," said Andy Marshall, Secretary- Treasurer of Local 104 in Phoenix, Arizona. "First, the Teamsters have a deep commitment to protecting the former America West mechanics we already represent. Second, we believe we can do a lot better for those mechanics currently under the IAM contract. Under the IAM contract, their pensions have been wiped out, their sick leave has been cut, and now they can't take vacation. My heart really goes out to them. What we can win for them will be a night-and-day contrast. The choice for mechanics is clear, and we believe that in a free election they will vote for the Teamsters."
Today's deadline for card filing was set following a National Mediation Board decision on January 30, 2006, that declared that America West and US Airways were now operating as a single airline and a union election could proceed.

Bombardier Learjet 40 XR Soars into Service: First Group of New Jets Flying with Traditional Customers and Flexjet Owners
Wichita February 13, 2006 - Bombardier today announced the entry into service
of its next generation Learjet 40 XR premium light jet. Five Learjet 40 XR
aircraft began flying in January 2006 with operators based in North and Latin
America, including three with Bombardier's Flexjet fractional ownership program.
"I'm impressed with our new Learjet 40 XR," said Glade Knight, chairman and chief executive officer, Apple Six Hospitality, a Richmond, Virginia-based real-estate investment company. "The six-passenger cabin is above the standard for this category jet and its outstanding range allows us to fly with ease and comfort throughout Eastern North America and the U.S. Midwest."
The Learjet 40 XR aircraft's speed and legendary reputation also made it the ideal choice for the short mission requirements of the Latin American launch customer. "With the fastest speed in its class and shorter takeoff distances under hot and high conditions, the Learjet 40 XR can easily tackle the most demanding mission requirements," said Jahid Fazal-Karim, senior vice-president, new aircraft sales, Bombardier Business Aircraft. "The Learjet 40 XR offers superior performance, value and comfort. It exemplifies our continued investment in our Learjet product family."
Launched in 2004, the Learjet 40 XR business jet surpasses the outstanding performance of the successful Learjet 40 aircraft by flying even further out of challenging airfields, and by delivering faster time-to-climb performance and shorter flight times. For example, taking off from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, at 28 degrees Celsius, carrying six passengers and with full fuel, the new Learjet 40 XR business jet will travel an additional 936 nautical miles (1,733 km) compared to the Learjet 40 model.
Newly upgraded Honeywell TFE731-BR twin turbofan engines power the aircraft. In service on the Learjet 45 XR super light business jet since June 2004, these engines meet the high performance needs of discerning operators.
In addition to delivering new Learjet 40 XR jets from its Wichita facility, Bombardier is also offering Learjet 40 customers the opportunity to upgrade their aircraft. Bombardier issued its BR engine retrofit service bulletin on November 7, 2005, and the first upgrades were completed in November with North American launch customer Malco Enterprises and U.K. launch customer Palace International.
