The Sultanate of Oman Orders Two Multi-Purpose High Speed Ferries

May 15, 2006 - The Sultanate of Oman and Austal today signed a contract for two 65 metre, 50 knot, multi-purpose passenger-vehicle catamaran ferries following a competitive international tender process.

The identical aluminium vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2007 and early 2008, have the capacity to carry 203 passengers and 56 cars or 54 lane metres of trucks plus 40 cars. The ferries are to provide a new tourism service to Oman’s ruggedly spectacular northern coastline and will be the flagship vessels in the Sultanate’s expanded marine transport and security network.

Speaking on behalf of the Sultanate, H.E. Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, Minister of National Economy and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, commented:

"Our requirement for these new ferries to meet the highest safety and passenger comfort standards with very high speeds, created a challenging tender requirement. We are pleased to confirm Austal’s involvement in this important project aimed at furthering Oman’s growing reputation as a premier international tourist destination."

In thanking the Minister, Austal’s Executive Chairman, John Rothwell responded:

"These two state of the art passenger and vehicle high speed vessels reflect Austal’s focus on tailoring marine transportation solutions to the operator’s individual needs."

"With fifteen vessels now operating in the Middle East, and ten in nearby Turkey, this prestigious contract further cements Austal’s commitment to, and understanding of, the unique needs of the region."

The Sultanate of Oman is situated on the southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula. The coastline extends 1,700 km from the Strait of Hormuz in the north, to the borders of the Republic of Yemen in the south and overlooks three seas namely, the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The scenic Musandam Peninsula forms the country's northern tip, and is the intended destination for the two Austal Auto Express ferries.

Optimised to cover the 180 nautical mile journey at speeds of up to 50 knots, each ferry is to be powered by four MTU 20 cylinder 1163 series diesel engines driving a Rolls Royce / KaMeWa waterjet propulsion system. Austal Sales Manager, Bill Hicks said this powerful propulsion package was selected to achieve the strict performance targets with special consideration for the local operating conditions.

"Oman’s approach to this contract from the outset has set a high standard not only in terms of performance but equally so with regard to safety, comfort and quality of finish. We have developed an exciting new design with many innovative features complying with the highest international standards for passenger ferries and tailored to local Oman conditions," he said.

Passenger accommodation features high quality seating and catering facilities all located on a single deck with additional seakeeping comfort provided by a SeaState Motion Control System.

Onboard features also include a helicopter landing facility that has been incorporated into the design to allow for emergency operations, as may be required, by the Police Coast Guard.

The vessel is being built in accordance with the requirements and under the survey of Det Norske Veritas, conforming to the International Maritime Organisation High Speed Craft code (HSC 2000).

Daily Matsu-Mawei Ferry Service to Commence Soon

Taipei May 16, 2006 - Direct shipping services will be established on a daily basis between Taiwan's Matsu and Mawei in China's Fujian Province starting next month, said Lienchiang County Magistrate Chen Hsueh-sheng (陳雪生) on Monday.

Matsu, which is administered by the Lienchiang County government, is one of the nation's two outlying islands connected by the "mini three links" with China.

Ferries between Matsu and Mawei in China currently run every day of the week except Saturdays.

Chen said he paid a visit to the Fuzhou mayor on Sunday, and exchanged views on establishing ferry services between Matsu and Mawei on Saturdays.

An influx of Chinese tourists is expected on Matsu with the Cabinet's decision to allow more Chinese to travel to Taiwan.

The number of passengers between the two destinations using the "mini three links" has grown more than 20-fold since the service was launched on January 1, 2001, according to Ministry of Transportation & Communications statistics.

Bargains Abound on Carnival Cruise Lines' 'Fun Ships'

Miami May 16, 2006 - Gas prices are rising, interest rates are rising, but Carnival cruises remain one of the best values available in the vacation market.

This year even those who have yet to make their summer vacation plans will find some great bargains still available. In fact, there are some incredible values on "Fun Ship" departures -- with rates up to 20 percent lower than last year.

"We have more and larger ships in the fleet than ever before, and that provides economies of scale and operating efficiencies that enable us to provide 21st-century cruises at 1980s prices," said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president and CEO. "That provides us an opportunity to expand the market by attracting more first-time cruisers who represent a guaranteed renewable resource for us. Once they try the Carnival product, we know they will come back again and again," he added.

Dickinson added that many "Fun Ship" bargains are on some of the cruise industry's newest, most technically advanced mega-liners, further enhancing the already tremendous value that cruising provides. "With a wide variety of all-inclusive dining, activity and entertainment options, cruising is the best value equation in the travel industry hands down," he said.

The Caribbean remains the most popular cruise destination by far and there are some particularly exceptional values on short cruises (five days or less) within the region, with prices starting at just $229 per person. Shorter voyages are the perfect introduction for first-time cruisers who are able to test the waters without investing a lot of time or money.

Outstanding bargains are available on week-long Caribbean cruises, as well, with rates starting at just $449 per person.

And with Carnival's "Fun Ships" departing from 18 different North American homeports, consumers have a host of "close to home" bargains, including eight- day Caribbean voyages from New York aboard the Carnival Legend starting at $599 per person, and four- or five-day cruises to Mexico aboard the Ecstasy from Galveston beginning at $329 per person.

For vacationers wishing to experience the Caribbean's newest destination, Grand Turk, a magnificent 10-square-mile island of the Turks & Caicos Islands chain offering beautiful beaches, watersports and some of the world's best diving, bargains abound.

Rates for five-day Fantasy cruises from Port Canaveral, Fla., and seven- day Elation cruises from Miami -- both of which feature visits to this spectacular island paradise, along with calls at the private Bahamian island of Half Moon Cay -- begin at $349 and $449 per person, respectively.

Regardless of what ship or itinerary consumers select, with these low prices there's never been a better time to "choose to choose."

Passenger Ship Vistamar Detained at Tilbury

London May 17, 2006 - Maritime & Coastguard Agency surveyors today detained the Maltese flagged `Vistamar' passenger ship at Tilbury Docks in London after numerous faults were identified on board including unusable port and starboard tenders; a dirty engine room and various oily hazards.

The vessel, with her passengers on board was allowed to move to a different mooring by the Tower of London before all the passengers will be disembarked tomorrow. The vessel has 178 passengers booked on board.

The 1989 built, Bureau Veritas classed, 117 metre length 7478 GT ship with is not allowed to travel further before any deficiencies are corrected and MCA surveyors have re-inspected the vessel.

Bryan Hopkins, Surveyor in Charge from the MCA's Orpington office said:

"The owners of the vessel in Almeria, Andalucia in Spain have been informed of our decision to detain this vessel. Our concerns were raised when items such as fire dampers were clearly inoperative; both lifeboats were damaged; escape signs were missing and various means of escape were not marked clearly.

"Other issues raised during our inspection included out of date publications on board; life saving signals were out of date and charts remain uncorrected.

"The MCA take passenger safety extremely seriously, and we will not allow vessels to traverse our waters where clearly international standards of safety are being breached. We apologise to any passenger who may have been inconvenienced by this action, but we hope they understand this detention has been undertaken in their best interest."

MCA Prevention of Ferry Departure From Portsmouth

London May 18, 2006 - The 2001 built, Spanish flagged, passenger ferry `Fortuny Sorolla' managed and owned by Acciona Trasmediterranea (AT Ferries) was prevented from leaving port today after an inspection by four MCA Surveyors.

The service on board the 26,916 GT vessel was due to run twice a week off-peak and three times a week during the high season to Bilbao from the UK.

It is an EC requirement that before any RoRo passenger ferry enters service for the first time from any EC port that it be inspected by the host state and issued with the appropriate clearance. The ferry company is responsible to arrange this inspection with the host state, in this case the UK, which it has not done.

MCA Surveyors who boarded the vessel this morning found various deficiencies including:

  • Poorly presented fire and boat drill
  • Emergency fire fighting equipment not for immediate use
  • search and rescue plan had not been lodged by the Company with Her Majesty's Coastguard as they are required to do.
  • Stability to be confirmed as in compliance with SOLAS and the Stockholm Agreement.

The vessel's classification society Bureau Veritas have been informed.

Amir Esmiley, Surveyor in Charge at the MCA's Marine Office in Southampton said:

"It is very unfortunate that this vessel simply turned up on our doorstep virtually unannounced. Safety on board such vessels are of crucial importance to us and a major inspection of the vessel by the UK authorities was required before entering service from a UK port.

"We have therefore no choice but to issue a prevention of operation notice preventing this vessel which does not meet the requirements of the EC Directive from operating. We apologise to any passenger that may be inconvenienced by this Notice, but we would reiterate that their safety is our first priority and the MCA will not compromise on such issues."

USCG Investigates Cruiseship Captain for Operating Vessel Intoxicated

Seattle May 19, 2006 - The Coast Guard is investigating the captain of the cruise ship Mercury for operating a commercial vessel under the influence of alcohol in violation of Title 46, United States Code, Section 2302. The statute, a Class A misdemeanor which is punishable with up to one year imprisonment, prohibits the operation of a vessel while under the influence of alcohol.

Celebrity Cruises, owners of the Mercury, removed the captain and the ship sailed safely with a qualified relief captain. The cruise line fully cooperated with the investigation.

At approximately 2:27 p.m., a Coast Guard Sector Seattle boarding officer, while performing a safety inspection onboard the Mercury, made contact with the vessel's captain and detected an odor of alcohol on his breath.

The federal statutory law provides that a person operating a commercial vessel on the waters of the United States is considered legally intoxicated if his blood alcohol concentration level exceeds .040.

The Mercury, owned by Celebrity Cruises, was moored at terminal 66 at the time of the incident.

The investigation emphasizes the Coast Guard's commitment to the American people to preserve the safety of the navigable waters of the United States. The resulting response by personnel from Coast Guard Sector Seattle, Coast Guard Investigative Service and the United States Attorney's office underscores the long standing inter-agency cooperation.

This incident should send a clear message to all mariners operating in U.S. waters that operating any vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a serious threat to the safety of other mariners, the general public, and maritime commerce and transportation.

Such behavior will not be tolerated and violations will be enforced to the fullest extent.

Cunard Line's Queen Victoria Keel Laying Ceremony Takes Place in Italy

Valencia CA May 19, 2006 - A ceremony marking the keel laying for Cunard Line's Queen Victoria was held today at the Marghera shipyard of Fincantieri near Venice, Italy. The second largest Cunarder ever built, Queen Victoria will enter service on December 11, 2007 and become the third in Cunard's fleet of Queens when she joins Queen Mary 2, the largest liner in the world, and QE2, the most famous ship in the world.

The keel laying involved the placement in the dry dock of one section of the ship's hull. This section is made up of six pre-manufactured blocks, weighs 325 tons and is fitted with 50 tons of pipes, cables, insulation and other equipment.

The ceremony follows an intensive period of design and development. 80 sections will be used in the construction of Queen Victoria and she will take to the water for the first time at her float out in January 2007 before her delivery to Cunard in December 2007.

In a speech prior to the laying of the keel, Carol Marlow, Cunard's president and managing director, said:

"Queen Victoria is a very significant ship for Cunard; not only is she the second largest ship we have ever built but she further reinforces Cunard's commitment to our British heritage. This is evident in her reflection of past Cunarders with her traditional livery and elegant and classically-styled interior. When she comes into service next year there will be, for the first time, a trio of Queens in Cunard's fleet."

Queen Victoria will not only be a classic ocean liner, offering the very best of Cunard's heritage and traditions along with all modern luxury facilities, but she will also feature some exciting innovations. These will include the first private boxes at sea, in the Royal Court Theatre; a

"Cunardia" museum, housing Cunard artifacts and memorabilia; the first two-story library at sea, with its 6,000 books and splendid spiral staircase; and a grand, British colonial-style conservatory, complete with central fountain, greenery and a retractable glass roof.

With the addition of this new 90,000-ton vessel, the Cunard liner legacy will be upheld, as Queen Victoria will offer all the classic characteristics that have become associated with the company's unique heritage. From the outside, her distinctive black and red livery and strengthened hull will hint at the experience that differentiates a Cunard liner from a modern-day cruise ship. This will be most evident in the ship's adherence to liner traditions of the past, with elegant and classically-styled public rooms, many on a grand scale, luxuriously endowed with rich wood panelling, intricate mosaics, chandeliers, and cool marbles.

The public spaces will be the setting for a host of diversions that also define Cunard's liner heritage, as guests enjoy stylish entertainment and informative talks that suggest a more civilized era of travel.

The ship will also feature the line's celebrated luxury Grills accommodation and dining, further enhanced on Queen Victoria with exclusive deck terraces and an al fresco dining option.

And, of course, the ship has been constructed with impressive sea keeping qualities that will enable it to travel easily and efficiently through the demanding waters of the world's oceans.

Queen Victoria will depart on her Maiden Voyage on Tuesday, December 11, 2007 -- a voyage that was full within days of being announced.

The world's newest ocean liner will depart New York on January 13, 2008 on her 105-day Pathway to the Explorers maiden world cruise which will call at 36 cities in 23 countries. Every call, with the exception of Lisbon, will be a maiden call for Cunard's new Queen. Queen Victoria will circumnavigate the globe in a westbound direction and, after calling at New York, will transit the Panama Canal before making maiden calls at some of the world's most famous cities including Los Angeles, Auckland, Sydney, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Dubai, Athens and Barcelona.

Pride of Hawai'i Christened in Ceremony in Los Angeles

Los Angeles May 21, 2006 - Tonight, NCL America again made U.S. maritime history by christening Pride of Hawai'i, the largest, most luxurious and most expensive U.S.-flagged cruise ship in history. The historic presentation of this new U.S.-flagged, U.S.-crewed passenger ship continues NCL America's dynamic revival of the U.S.-flagged cruise industry that had seemingly been extinguished in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

At the official christening ceremony at the Port of Los Angeles, Star Cruises Chairman Tan Sri KT LIM and NCL Corporation's President and CEO Colin Veitch were joined by the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, senior United States Senator from Hawai'i, who sponsored and named the vessel at the pier side event. The Senator was joined by six female crewmembers from Pride of Hawai'i, all hailing from Hawai'i, who christened the ship with the traditional bottle of champagne.

Also participating in the ceremony, were Captain Paul Wiedenhoeft, Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach; the Honorable Julie Nelson, Acting Deputy Administrator and Chief Counsel of the Maritime Administration; and Mike Sacco president of the Seafarers International Union and the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO.

The Pride of Hawai'i crewmembers participating in the ceremony were Jana Anguay, a singer; Shastein Colon and Monica Pratt, both room stewards; Shari An Pontin, a senior officer utility; Janhavi Cleveland, a massage therapist; and Heather Holmes, a dancer.

"Today makes the culmination of our effort. This is the third and largest ship in a planned three ship U.S. flagged fleet," said Star Cruises Chairman Tan Sri KT LIM. "We have invested over $1.2 billion building these three world class mega ships, purpose built for our unique Freestyle Cruising and outfitted to reflect the spirit and Aloha of the Hawai'i Islands."

"NCL has been at the forefront of industry developments for our entire history. We have done it so consistently for 40 years now that we like to think that we have created a tradition out of breaking with tradition. And today we celebrate what is undoubtedly our greatest break with tradition," said Colin Veitch, president and CEO of NCL Corporation. "I'm very proud to celebrate the completion of a daring project to convert a large part of our business from the traditional model of the international cruise industry to the much more challenging and less developed model of US flag cruising."

Senator Inouye, Pride of Hawai'i's sponsor said, "The christening of Pride of Hawai'i is the capstone of America's return to the passenger cruise industry. In addition to the significant economic benefits to the visitor industry in my state of Hawai'i, Pride of Hawai'i and her sister ships will have a broad economic impact throughout the United States by creating as many as 20,400 direct and indirect jobs, including thousands of U.S. seafarer jobs and nearly $1 billion in annual U.S. economic activity. I am very proud to serve as Pride of Hawai'i's sponsor."

USCG Captain Paul Wiedenhoeft said, "I'm impressed with the cooperation between the US Coast Guard, NCL and NCL America through the entire process that culminates here today. The safety and security of the passengers, crew and M/V Pride of Hawai'i herself have exceeded expectations and bode well for a successful career and future interaction between the ship and the Coast Guard," he continued. "I look forward to hearing about the hundreds of American mariners who now have the opportunity to work aboard such a fine vessel and demonstrate their high degree of professionalism to the cruise industry."

Julie Nelson, Acting Deputy Maritime Administrator and Chief Counsel of the Maritime Administration said, "It is very gratifying to us to see the continued revival of the Hawaiian cruise trade. The addition of this U.S.- flag cruise ship to the fleet adds nearly 4,000 American seafaring jobs. We look forward to thousands of additional jobs as the industry continues to grow."

"We are proud to be here today with NCL America to celebrate this historic event," said Mike Sacco, president of the Seafarers International Union. "These U.S.-flag cruise ships create thousands of American seafaring jobs and represent a real partnership between NCL America, the shipboard workers and their unions."

Pride of Hawai'i is the third in a series of U.S.-flag cruise ships sailing under the NCL America brand and built for the Hawai'i market in furtherance of the "Hawai'i Cruise Ship Initiative," legislation sponsored by Senator Inouye and passed by the United States Congress in February 2003.

At just over 93,500 gross registered tons, carrying more than 2,400 passengers, and costing over half a billion dollars, Pride of Hawai'i is by far the largest and most expensive U.S. flagged passenger ship ever built. It employs a crew of over 1000, bringing the total seagoing workforce of NCL's U.S. flagged fleet to approximately 4000, making NCL America the largest private employer of American seafarers in the world.

Pride of Hawai'i features 10 restaurants, three swimming pools, family- friendly accommodations, a state-of-the-art spa and dynamic public rooms. The ship features a new style of accommodations -- 10 Courtyard Villas -- which along with the ship's two Garden Villas -- make up the largest, grandest, most luxurious, most innovative suite complex in Hawai'i. The suite complex boasts a private courtyard and sundeck and both Courtyard and Garden Villa guests have a concierge lounge available to them.

Additionally, Pride of Hawai'i features "Bar Central," a martini bar, a champagne and wine bar, and a beer and whisky pub all connected, with three distinct personalities, plus nine other bars and lounges for passengers to enjoy.

Pride of Hawai'i will sail seven-day, inter-island itineraries out of Honolulu year round beginning June 5, offering 100 hours in port. Ports of call include Hilo, Hawai'i; an overnight in Kahului, Maui; Kona, Hawai'i; and an overnight Nawiliwili, Kaua'i.

NCL Corporation Ltd. ("NCL") is an innovative cruise company headquartered in Miami, Florida, with a fleet of 15 ships in service and under construction. The corporation oversees the operations of Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL America, and Orient Lines. The company is currently building two ships -- Norwegian Pearl, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2006 and Norwegian Gem for delivery in fourth quarter of 2007.

Baked Alaska Dessert a Nightly Favorite on Holland America Line Alaska Cruises in 2006

Seattle May 22, 2006 - Holland America Line has elevated the timeless cruising dessert, Baked Alaska, to a new art form -- for the eye as well as the palate. Gold Rush Baked Alaska, complete with a dusting of real edible gold, is the star of the dessert menu on every Alaska cruise this season. It is offered each night with a revolving variety of tempting toppings, including fresh berries and other delicious products from the Great State.

The Gold Rush version of Baked Alaska starts with quality ingredients of French vanilla ice cream crusted with a double chocolate fudge brownie and a meringue. That concoction is topped with such delights as fresh Alaskan berries, hot fudge, blueberry confit, crushed macaroons, warm caramel toffee, brandied cranberries or bing cherries, Yukon whiskey butterscotch, strawberries Romanoff, Alaskan huckleberries, white chocolate fudge, or a host of other similar treats. A different combination of toppings is on the menu on each night of a seven-day cruise. Over the top of each individual dessert is a dusting of edible 24-karat gold. All desserts are prepared daily by Holland America Line's pastry chefs.

Baked Alaska has long been a classic dessert on cruises, dating back to the days of legendary ocean liners, and Holland America Line has turned the spotlight brightly on this classic with its new rendering of the old favorite. "Offering the most innovative dining choices is another way we are solidifying our leadership position," said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, senior vice president, marketing and sales.

Going Wild for Salmon Continues

In 2005, the Holland America Line culinary team developed 50 distinctive recipes to showcase on dinner menus, which already offer poached, sauteed or baked salmon as an alternative to featured menu choices. The "Going Wild for Salmon" menu additions continue to be available seven nights a week in the Main Dining Rooms, the casual Lido Restaurants and exclusive Pinnacle Grills on all Alaska cruise ships in 2006. The program also includes special on-board culinary events, cooking demonstrations, and seminars.

Recipes are the creation of Master Chef Rudi Sodamin, who serves as culinary consultant for Holland America Line's fleet of five-star ships.

Sodamin is the driving force behind the enhancement of Holland America Line's already superb dining offerings and has developed a fresh line of full-concept dining "experiences" for Holland America Line guests. One of the hospitality industry's most accomplished chefs, Sodamin brings excitement, innovation and unparalleled quality standards to menus at sea. Together with the Holland America Line Culinary Team, Sodamin continues to whip up more cruise line and food industry firsts, such as Gold Rush Baked Alaska and Salmon 50 ways.

Santa Clarita CA May 22, 2006 - When Crown Princess sets sail for the first time on June 14, those onboard will not only experience a plethora of non-stop onboard activities, but also Princess' newest "pocket of tranquility" called The Sanctuary. An adults-only retreat on the uppermost forward deck of the ship, The Sanctuary offers a relaxing alternative to the myriad outdoor activities and entertainment available elsewhere throughout the ship. Solitude seekers will be able to escape completely to this plush, outdoor spa-inspired setting with signature beverages, light meals, massages, attentive service and relaxing personal entertainment.

"Serenity Stewards" Attend To Every Need

The presence of Serenity Stewards in The Sanctuary underscores the atmosphere of tranquility and service, offering a respite for relaxation. These stewards are on hand to provide passengers with everything from a chilled face towel and Evian water atomizers, to a menu of healthy beverages and fare. Serenity Stewards will also have personal MP3 players with noise canceling headphones available for rent, loaded with themed playlists focused on relaxation for those who want to escape with music.

Al Fresco Massages

The Sanctuary will also feature two outdoor private cabanas where guests can also take advantage of the exclusive Lotus Spa Services at The Sanctuary, including sybaritic favorites such as a Deep Tissue Muscle Massage, a relaxing Swedish Massage or a Full Body Lotus Massage especially for couples. Shorter interludes of massage pampering will also be available as massage therapists will offer back, shoulder, and neck massages using special massage chairs.

When not indulging in spa services, Sanctuary guests lounge amidst lush greenery, with the presence of gentle breezes, ocean waves, and softly piped-in spa music combining to further insulate the area with relaxation sounds. Guests will relax on plush outdoor furniture including double loungers for couples, as well as deluxe chaise lounges and chairs.

And for those looking for a relaxing end to their day, sunset yoga sessions offer the opportunity to unwind and tone their muscles accompanied by nature's beauty.

Jan Swartz, Princess' senior vice president of customer service and sales, explains that, "With The Sanctuary, Princess has expanded once again on our concept of choice -- we're not only providing an alternative venue for our relaxing spa services, but also offering passengers the opportunity to escape to a tranquil retreat at any time, day or night."

Refreshing Drinks and Healthy Snacks

Guests can also refresh with a variety of special drinks and snacks created exclusively for The Sanctuary. Each day Serenity Stewards will be on hand to offer guests an array of drinks and snacks. Signature Sanctuary beverages include healthy smoothies, energy drinks, iced flavored waters and freshly made lemonade. A menu featuring a selection of light bites such as refreshing fruit skewers, lettuce wrapped spring rolls, and spicy tuna pate with baked pita wedges will also be available through the Serenity Stewards.

There is no charge to use The Sanctuary, though capacity is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Sanctuary is located on Crown Princess' deck 17, adjacent to the Lotus Spa and the spa's swim-against-the-current lap pool.

In addition to The Sanctuary, the 113,000-ton Crown Princess will introduce a number of new design innovations to the Princess fleet, including a dramatic new piazza-style atrium and new casual dining venues. Within the new street cafe environment of the atrium, passengers will find an International Cafe serving up fresh pastries and baked goods in the morning and assorted other offerings throughout the day, as well as a wine and seafood bar. Several signature Princess venues have been further enhanced, including an expanded Sabatini's Italian trattoria with a new piano lounge, and the Crown Grill, a new steak and seafood restaurant with an open, theater-style kitchen where chefs will custom-prepare steamed shellfish and cooked-to-order steaks and chops.

The ship will also feature the many hallmark features that define the Princess experience, including the dramatic Movies Under the Stars poolside movie screen, multiple dining and entertainment options, a Lotus Spa fitness center, an extensive children and teen's center, a wedding chapel and nearly 900 staterooms with private balconies.

The inaugural 2006 summer season for Crown Princess will feature nine-day roundtrip voyages to both the Eastern and Western Caribbean, and will mark the return of Princess visits to Bermuda, as well as the line's first-ever regular calls to Grand Turk. In the fall the ship will reposition to San Juan for winter Caribbean sailings.

2006 Cruise Holidays Travel Trends Survey Shows Longer, More Exotic Cruises Gaining Popularity

Minneapolis May 22, 2006 - Today, Cruise Holidays -- the oldest and largest cruise specialty retailer in North America -- announced the results of the 2006 Cruise Holidays Travel Trends Survey and for the second year in a row, the Caribbean ranks as the top cruise destination. In addition, new industry trends reveal a growing interest in longer cruises and more exotic itineraries. This survey was conducted from March 20 - April 4, 2006, in the United States and Canada, with 86% of the Cruise Holidays network participating. The survey also found that cruising is increasingly appealing to a younger and wider audience. Mature travelers (those 55 and over) represent half or less of Cruise Holidays customers according to 63% of respondents, while families now make up between 31-70% of customers for over 40% of respondents.

"We're pleased that the results confirm the anecdotal good news we've been hearing from our franchisees over the past several months," said Peter Thomson, vice president and COO of Cruise Holidays. "While the Caribbean and Alaska continue to be favorite destinations, cruisers are looking for something new and different. They still want all that cruising has to offer, but are interested in exploring ports of call much further from home such as Europe, as well as emerging cruise destinations such as South America and Asia."

Additionally, Thomson pointed to the extremely positive outlook Cruise Holidays stores have for the year ahead. "What differentiates Cruise Holidays is the level of cruise expertise that is recognized by our customers. In a year where most have conceded flat cruise sales, we're proud that 77% of our franchisees told us that their bookings are even or up over last year and 95% said they are optimistic or satisfied about their business for the coming year."

Top Cruise Destinations

Two distinct questions were asked regarding the top cruise destinations Cruise Holidays stores are booking in 2006. One question asks for the singular most popular destination being booked so far in 2006. The second question asked Cruise Holidays stores to name a total of the five most popular destinations their customers are booking this year. What is most interesting about the second question is that cruising in the Mediterranean is one of the five most popular destinations now being booked by over 84% of Cruise Holidays stores -- up from a mere 54.5% last year. As with last year, the Caribbean and Alaska continue to be ranked one and two, respectively, on both questions.

Also noteworthy:

  • Itinerary and cruise line -- as opposed to price -- remain the two most important deciding factors when customers book a cruise
  • Favorite European port: Rome (followed by Venice)
  • Favorite Caribbean island or port: St. Thomas
  • Emerging destination: South America
  • Cruise Holidays stores are selling more 8-10 day (38% compared to 27% in 2005) and 11-14 day cruises (8% up from 3% last year)
  • The booking window for 92% of the respondents is four (4) months or longer; it is six (6) months or longer for 54%

Marqui Enables Cruise West to Dramatically Reduce Time and Resources Required to Coordinate Multichannel Marketing Campaigns

Portland OR May 23, 2006 - Marqui, Inc., the company revolutionizing how organizations handle marketing communications, today announced that Cruise West, the largest American-owned cruise line, has implemented Marqui's software to streamline nearly all of its marketing initiatives. Marqui's software suite, which integrates everything from Web content management to blogging to e-mail campaigns, has already delivered substantial benefits to Cruise West, including a massive reduction in cycle times for integrated marketing campaigns.

Seattle-based Cruise West offers customers the opportunity to explore remote, worldwide locales by providing distinctive, personalized itineraries not offered by the larger, more traditional cruise lines. To promote upcoming tours, the organization frequently conducts complex marketing campaigns that involve integrated print and online elements. Warren Sukernek, Vice President Marketing and Sales at Cruise West, explains, "We target a very savvy customer base that wants relevant, customized information available in a variety of formats, such as print brochures, e-mails, newsletters, RSS feeds and more.

"Before implementing Marqui, we were using a combination of vendors and products to manage these activities, which was not only a logistical nightmare, but also meant campaigns were often out of synch by 40 days or more. With Marqui, we can easily re-purpose content across print and online initiatives, and we've also been able to eliminate the timing issue so that our campaigns are now perfectly in synch."

Capitalizing on the power of the software-as-a-service approach, Marqui has developed the first solution that simplifies and automates a broad range of marketing activities, including blogging, e-mail campaigns, Web content management, search engine optimization, program measurement and more. By combining all of these capabilities into one Web-based suite, Marqui empowers customers to streamline marketing initiatives -- and improve program effectiveness -- without the issues and costs of multiple product purchases, integrations and training.

"Today's marketers have to manage an enormous number of moving parts and deal with increasingly tough deadlines. Cruise West is the perfect example. In addition to engaging in all of the traditional marketing activities, Cruise West is seeking to connect with its customer base even more by experimenting with new community-building initiatives, such as blogs and podcasts," said Stephen J. King, President and CEO at Marqui. "This really underscores the value of Marqui.

Not only can we help companies take advantage of activities like blogging, but we also make managing all of these moving parts much, much easier."
