Norfolk Southern Awards NASCENT Automated Gate System Contract for the
Croxton Intermodal Terminal in New Jersey
Charlotte NC September 27,
2005 - NASCENT Technology LLC the leading provider of technical solutions for
the transportation industry, has been awarded a contract from Norfolk Southern
Corporation (NS) to provide its SYNAPSE(TM) Automated Gate System (AGS) for the
Croxton Intermodal Facility in Jersey City, New Jersey.
"We're delighted to have been selected again by NS as their Gate technology partner," said Barry Hall, NASCENT Vice President. "We're looking forward to building on our successful AGS deployment in Austell," added Hall.
NASCENT will deploy the same SYNAPSE(TM) AGS system that is currently in use at the NS Whitaker Intermodal Facility in Austell, Georgia. The system allows terminals to increase the gate throughput of ISO, intermodal containers, and trailers, while reducing data entry error rates. Combining inspection "portals," Optical Character Recognition (OCR), digital cameras, and Voice-over-IP-enabled communication kiosks, the system facilitates remote communications and information gathering.
"We couldn't be more pleased about our relationship with Norfolk Southern," added Fabio Teti, NASCENT President. "The AGS award for the Croxton facility is yet another step in what we trust will be a long, mutually-beneficial, journey for both companies."
NJ TRANSIT Orders Another Bombardier 131 Multi-Level Commuter Cars
Montreal September 27, 2005 - Bombardier Transportation announced today
that NJ TRANSIT has exercised options for 131 additional multi-level vehicles.
The exercised options are valued at approximately $206 million US (171 million
euros). Deliveries of the cars are scheduled to take place between June 2007 and
August 2008. The new cars will carry commuters between New Jersey and the heart
of Manhattan.
With these options, Bombardier now has firm orders for 231 multi-level vehicles to increase train system capacity on NJ TRANSIT's lines. Total value of the firm orders received since the announcement of the contract in 2002 is approximately $457 million US. Should all remaining options be exercised, the entire contract would total 276 vehicles and be valued at $525 million US.
The first multi-level car from the 2002 contract was unveiled to the press on September 14 at Newark's Penn Station.
William Spurr, President, Bombardier Transportation, North America commented: "This new order is a further proof of NJ TRANSIT's confidence in our vehicles. These new cars are being custom designed for NJ TRANSIT, and include direct input from NJ TRANSIT daily customers. It was evident at the unveiling ceremony that riders appreciate the features of this new car scheduled to enter in revenue service toward the end of 2006."
The stainless steel carbodies will be manufactured at Bombardier's manufacturing site in La Pocatiere, Quebec, with final assembly taking place at the Plattsburgh, New York facility.
NJ TRANSIT is an established customer of Bombardier. Over the years, Bombardier has supplied over 300 Comet II, III and IV push-pull commuter cars to the Transit Authority, some of which have been in service for over twenty years, as well as 29 ALP-46 electric locomotives.
Recent deliveries of Bombardier products into the New York/New Jersey region include M-7 electric multiple units (EMU) to MTA/Metro-North Railroad and MTA/ Long Island Rail Road, the AirTrain JFK automated transit system at JFK International Airport, NJ TRANSIT's RiverLINE light rail transit system operated in southern New Jersey, and 1,030 R142 rapid-transit cars for the subway system operated by MTA/New York City Transit.
Norfolk Southern Names Atlanta Building for David R. Goode
Atlanta September 27, 2005 - Norfolk Southern Corporation today named its midtown Atlanta office building the David R. Goode Building, in honor of the company's chairman and chief executive officer, who is scheduled to retire in early 2006.
Goode, who became chairman, president and CEO in 1992 led Norfolk Southern through a challenging period that included economic downturns and a complex consolidation with Conrail to unprecedented levels of safety, customer service and financial performance.
President Wick Moorman called the building name a gesture of appreciation from the people of Norfolk Southern to a great leader. "The fact is that David's contributions will far outlive bricks and mortar," Moorman said. "His focus on making rail a dependable and sought-after transportation partner has helped shape Norfolk Southern and the rail industry for the new century."
Norfolk Southern acquired the 12-story building at 1200 Peachtree St. from AT&T in 2004 and began consolidating departments there from various Atlanta locations in 2005. Currently, about 1,200 employees work at the building and 600 more are expected to relocate there in the near future.
