USCG, FBI & Washington State Patrol Working Together to Protect Puget Sound's Ferries
Seattle April 21, 2006 - Recent media reports have highlighted the potential for the Washington State Ferries to be a potential terrorist target. At this time, there is no specific, credible intelligence information indicating an attack is planned against the ferry system. However, the Coast Guard, FBI, Washington State Ferries and Washington State Patrol continue to closely coordinate on identifying threats and addressing potential vulnerabilities in the Washington ferry system and the rest of the maritime transportation sector. Ferry passengers can be assured that behind the scenes, those partner agencies are working around the clock investigating reports, analyzing information, carrying out security measures on the ferries and terminals, and patrolling the waters to ensure the safety of the ferry system and all of Puget Sound.
Regarding the findings of the Department of Justice Inspector General report, the public should know that the Coast Guard and the FBI each have a unique set of complementary responsibilities, capabilities and statutory authorities when it comes to protecting our nation.
Locally, there is an excellent partnership and working relationship between Coast Guard, the FBI, Washington State Patrol, and the Washington State Ferries.
Securing our ports and waterways is a team effort and everyone - from the maritime industry to government agencies and private citizens to the international community - plays an important role in ensuring that our waterways remain secure and open for business.
Although the current Maritime Security classification remains at its lowest level everyone including the general public has to remain alert. Vigilance is very important and as always, we encourage all citizens on or near the region's waterways to keep a watchful eye for items left unattended or suspicious activity and report these incidents, in the case of a ferry to a ferry crew member or to local authorities immediately or call 911, 1-800-424-8802 or 1-877-24WATCH. Remember: "See Something...Say Something"!

DHL Sets Up Disaster Response Team in Singapore
Singapore April 21, 2006 - DHL today announced the launch of its first Disaster Response Team (DRT), called the DHL DRT Asia Pacific, to be based in Singapore. DHL is a brand of Deutsche Post World Net, the world's leading express and logistics company. The DRT is the first visible product of DHL's strategic partnership with the UN System in the field of Disaster Management. The task of the DRT is to ensure that relief reaches people quickly and effectively by reducing bottlenecks at airports close to the scene of major natural disasters.
"By setting up Disaster Response Teams, DHL is enhancing its commitment to supporting the United Nations and the international community's humanitarian missions on a long-term basis," Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, Chairman and CEO of Deutsche Post World Net pointed out. "We have already gained extensive experience in responding to recent major natural disasters."
DHL employees were actively engaged in providing humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as well as after Hurricane Katrina in the United States in the summer of 2005 and last year's South Asian earthquake in Pakistan. In December 2005, DHL entered into a partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the area of Disaster Management. It is the aim of DHL and OCHA to establish a global network of Disaster Response Teams.
Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, is the Patron of the DRT in Singapore.
"This cooperation underlines the important role that companies can play in complementing the UN's programs to benefit more people across the world," said Puji Pujiono, Regional Disaster Response Advisor for Asia, OCHA.
DHL's Disaster Response Teams will apply their professional knowledge of logistics and organize the handling, warehousing and loading of relief goods at the airport for onward transportation in an effective manner. As a result, people in need receive relief supplies quickly.
Scott Price, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific, said: "We are committed to sharing our core competence in logistics and our manpower in order to achieve this goal. And working with all our partners, we believe that we will be better prepared in the unfortunate event of a major natural disaster in the South Asian region."
The DHL DRT Asia Pacific consists of a pool of about 80 specially trained DHL experts, who, in addition to their normal jobs at DHL, have volunteered to take part in the DRT's humanitarian work. The teams will normally be deployed for a period of up to three weeks following a major natural disaster. By that point in time, the initial surge of international charter aircraft bringing in aid supplies has normally decreased to a manageable level for the airport authorities and their local partners to handle.
Singapore was chosen as the site for the DHL DRT Asia Pacific because of its strategic location in the region and for its excellent telecommunications, transportation and logistics infrastructure.
The next Disaster Response Team will be established in Miami. It will cover the Latin America and Caribbean regions. The Disaster Response Team's services are provided as an in-kind donation. In addition to the existing work in the field of Disaster Response, the strategic partnership between DHL and the UN System will also cover other areas of Disaster Management - such as Disaster Preparedness.
Fincantieri: Christening of the Fast Ferry "Gotlandia II"
Muggiano, Italy April 18, 2006 - Today at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard, there was the christening ceremony of the fast ferry "Gotlandia II", ordered in June 2004 by the Swedish owner Rederi A.B. Gotland for its Destination Gotland subsidiary. The ship, which was built at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso shipyard and fitted out at Muggiano, was completed in just 14 months from keel laying to delivery.
Present at the ceremony were, for the ship owner, Jan-Eric Nilsson, Company Chairman, and the Honorary Chairman, Eric D. Nilsson, and, for Fincantieri, Alberto Maestrini, Executive Senior Vice President, Head of the Naval Vessel Business Unit. Staffan Wrigstad, Swedish Ambassador in Italy, also attended the event.
Acting as godmother to "Gotlandia II" was Mrs. Marianne Nilsson, wife of Rederi A.B. Gotland’s Honorary Chairman.
The vessel, which was built and designed in accordance with IMO code HSC 2000 and is classed by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, has a high-tensile steel hull and light alloy superstructure, is 122 meters long, 16.65 meters wide and is equipped with two bow thrusters, four diesel engines of 9,000 kW each and four steering- reversing water jets. She is able to reach a maximum speed of approximately 40 knots and will have an operating speed of 36 knots. Her maximum deadweight is 580 tonnes, with a capacity for 780 passengers in addition to over 160 cars or 8 buses.
The ship, which is scheduled to operate in the Baltic Sea, has been designed and built in accordance with the stringent requirements laid down by the Swedish Maritime Authority with regard to environmental impact. She is equipped with catalytic converters to reduce the level of pollutants emitted both at sea and when in port and with passive control systems of acoustic pollution which will enable noise levels to be substantially contained at all times.
The design and construction of the vessel has drawn on dual technologies, some from the naval field, as in the series of high performance ferries built by Fincantieri in the second half of the 1990s. These ferries were developed from the experience of the "Destriero", which, in 1992 won the "Blue Ribbon", setting the record for the Atlantic crossing, without refueling at an average speed of over 53 knots, with peak speeds of almost 70 knots.
This new ferry will be the fifth of this type of ship built by Fincantieri to take up service in the Baltic Sea. Further fast ferries built by Fincantieri are in service in the seas off Great Britain and Italy.
Through this order Fincantieri has further strengthened its business links with the Scandinavian market. Indeed, during 2004 the company gained a contract from the Finnish owner, Finnlines, for the construction of five large Ro-Pax ferries, and, in 2005, an order for a large fast cruise ferry for the Estonian owner Tallink.
