Videoconferencing Hits The Home Market

In past issues of Telework International we have researched and followed the evolution of videoconferencing technology. The evolution started with the large expensive room-based systems that became more affordable as "roll about" units were utilized. The latest trend in the videoconferencing world is the use of desktop videoconferencing.

In the Fall '95 Issue of Telework International we reviewed three of the top contenders in this marketplace. The review was based on the business value organizations can attain from these products.

The December 4, 1995 issue of Business in Vancouver introduced us to the potential move of this technology to the home market. During the month of December, 1995, Doppler Computer Superstores in Vancouver and Calgary were offering a free five minute videoconference to customers. The promotion was a joint effort with Intel Corporation using Intel ProShare software.

Michael Agerbo, Doppler Marketing Manager is quoted in Business in Vancouver as saying "he predicts that as more people and businesses hook onto the ISDN data transmission line that are necessary for the systems, more computer users will begin to use the technology."

This article is just to remind us that business is not the only force pushing the use of technology. The home market is huge and the potential to sell these high technology tools is significant if the price can be lowered to a level appropriate for the home.
