Event Details: The 2008 NATIONAL SLAM! Competition is coming to Calgary in
November and The Calgary International Spoken Word Festival is gearing up
to host Canada’s top slam poets. SLAM teams (12 teams of 4) from across
Canada will fly into Cowtown for five action-packed, burgeoning days of
workshops, discussion, and high-octane head-to-head bouts of 3-minute
poems – until a winning team is crowned!
Calgary’s own Golden Beret winner and May SLAM celebrity judge, Sarah
Murphy will open the celebration with the launch of her spoken word CD,

Event Details: Louis de Paor is considered a key protagonist in the
1970s-80s Irish language poetry renaissance, and his first bilingual
collection won the Victorian Premier’s Award for Literary Translation. He
was also granted a Writer’s Fellowship by the Australia Council in 1995.
In Ireland he has received the O’Shaughnessy Award and the Oireachtas
Prize for poetry. His academic work includes articles and books on a
broad range of writing in Irish from the court poetry of medieval Ireland
to the work of contemporary poets. He is currently working on a study of
the writings of Flann O’Brien.
