The National Library’s Collection Development Policies: Update

The National Library recently created a working group with a mandate to review and update its current collection development policies. The scope of these policies will be broadened in response to the evolving strategic vision of the National Library. Several factors influence this strategic vision and will have a significant impact on the development of new collection guidelines. These factors include the changing demographic make-up of the country, the rapidly evolving developments in electronic resources, the information needs of Canadians in today's knowledge society, the many facets of education (e.g., lifelong learning, literacy and e-education), and the needs of the Canadian library community.

The working group will consult with the community, and will present its recommendations to the National Librarian by the end of January 2001.
