A New Director of AcquisitionsThe National Library of Canada (NLC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jean-Eudes Bériault as director of Acquisitions, Acquisitions and Bibliographic Services. Jean-Eudes Bériault has been working in the position since August 2000, while Maryna Nowosielski was assigned to the Working Group on Collection Policies of the NLC. The Acquisitions directorate is responsible for the administration of the following: legal deposit of materials produced in Canada in all formats and languages; and purchasing operations or reception of gifts of Canadian materials not affected by legal deposit law or of material published abroad that deals with Canada or Canadians. The depth and integrated development of the National Library collections depend on the work of this directorate. The strategic priorities assigned to the directorate deal primarily with developing legal deposit for electronic materials produced by Government of Canada departments and agencies and by Canadian publishers, as well as developing the Library's ethnic and Aboriginal collections. Jean-Eudes Bériault came to the National Library of Canada from Parks Canada in 1976. His work within the various sections of the NLC involving both systems and infrastructure enabled him to contribute to the development of new systems and to collaborate in the development and testing of protocols to establish a decentralized national network of libraries. In June 1990, he joined the Acquisitions and Bibliographic Services branch as its systems coordinator, a position he held prior to becoming director of Acquisitions.
