The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) will be establishing a renewed Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care (CTFPHC) as part of our mandate and priority for disease prevention and health promotion. The renewed Task Force aims to build on the previous Task Force's success and international recognition with its 25-year history of pioneering the development of evidence-based guidelines for primary care.

The field of primary care has evolved. The Task Force will address the need for streamlined access to credible, up-to-date and relevant evidence to support primary care practice. In addition, it will work with a variety of health professional groups and non-governmental organizations to support development of prevention tools and activities to aid implementation of clinical guidelines in practice. The Task Force will also play a key role in fostering linkages between primary care and community or public health programs that can be important resources and supports for preventive clinical care.

Task Force Model

The Task Force Scientific Panel will be comprised of independent experts who will identify topics of priority for primary and preventive care, review the best available evidence and lead the development of clinical practice guidelines and related recommendations to support preventive practice. The Task Force operations will be supported by a team of professionals in the Public Health Agency of Canada as well as a university-based Evidence Synthesis Centre responsible for developing systematic evidence reviews to inform clinical practice guideline and recommendation development.

Widespread support exists for the Task Force and its previous work, providing PHAC with the opportunity to build on this foundation and ensure that the renewed Task Force is appropriate to the current context where guidelines have proliferated and issues of utilization in practice have become central challenges. With a health care system burdened with multiple chronic conditions, putting prevention into practice has never been more important. The Task Force will play an essential role in achieving this goal.

Recruitment of Task Force Chair and Members

We encourage you to help us build a new Task Force with Canada's best and brightest in the field of clinical preventive services. PHAC will be soliciting nominations for qualified individuals to serve as members or Chair of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.
